Need tips to relax myself before performing

There's nothing wrong with one quick drink before you start or depending on the gig, half way through. As long as you don't get rolling drunk then I can't see why it should be a problem. Just make sure that you have a mint afterwards because you don't want to be smelling of the evil booze when you're performing.

You're very kind! :D Growing up in Darkest Cheshire, there was nothing to do but drink. I discovered that I have a high tolerance for booze, if not a large appetite for it.

I wouldn't advise anyone to have a drink of alcohol before performing, or any strong smelling food such as curry, garlic or chilli for that matter(especially if you perform close-up).

Even if you try to cover it with a mint your customers will still smell the alcohol / food on your breath.

I have smelt alcohol on a few people's breaths when they perform to me and it instantly makes a bad impression on me.

As long as you arrive in plenty of time, know your routines backwards including outs for all the possible things that could go wrong and have rehearsed well your nerves should diminish with each performance.

Thanks for the tips to relax myself. I don't drink so i will not be drinking at all. But yeah its not nerves just I get to excited jumping up and down and so forth so yeah. Maybe cause i am just pumped up but yeah I will use the advice to calm myself down.

Develop and maintain a pre-show routine. I like a black coffee and a couple bottles of water. I often get everything prepped while drinking my coffee, then relax and close my eyes, visualizing my way through the routine, the audience reaction, my facial expressions, my handling, routining, etc.

Works for me and developed by me, for me, over time....start with something and build from there. Watching/working with professional athletes is a great way to see how routine is an important part of pre-perforamance work

Lucozade tablets. Honestly. Eat one 10 minutes before performing and the butterflies will just melt away. There's probably a very scientific reason why it works, but I don't know what it is. I think it's magic.

It really works. A few years ago I used to get butterflies before starting to work and it used to really annoy me. Somebody told me to get some glycerine tablets and they work a treat. There's Lucozade tablets plus if you go in Boots there's another brand as well - Dexi-something-or-other I think. But yes, they really work. They won't stop the hands from shaking (you need whisky for that :wink: ), but they will dispell the demon butterflies of nervousness.

Of course being a hardened pro I don't need them anymore. Now I just take Rennie to counteract the ulcers I've got from years of overdosing on glycerine tablets.

thanks for the information about a pill that can help. I was just wondering are they any side effect to taking the pill meaning risk involved? Thanks if you can answer that question.

Dextrose and glucose are types of sugar. There should be no side-effects for normal, healthy 'users'. If you are diabetic things will be quite different, of course!

thanks let me just make sure i understand you. You are saying there is no side effects unless you are diabetic. If your normal and are not diabetic there is no issues because TheMagicwand stated that he has gotten ulcers from them from overdosing so yeah thats why i am asking that question? So I guess no problems unless you overdose. Thanks if you can clear up my question.

I am not a medical doctor. However, I'll stick my neck out and say that you are no more likely to have problems eating a packet of Dextrose or Glucose 'tablets' (sweets/candy) than you are scoffing a box of chocolates. You can overdose on anything. By definition, 'overdose' means taking too much. Drink too much water and you can die, for example. If you are a normal, healthy person then a sweety will not harm you. I'd also be surprised if it calms you down before a performance, but turning an imaginary saucer over in my mind helps with hiccups so maybe the candy will help with your stagefright. Try and see...
