Redunancy and Kent

Postby EckoZero » Apr 2nd, '09, 22:17

So it's come to this.
EckoZero writing a post about how today he was made redundant (with three months notice - odd that).

Before we begin, I should like to point out that I am not after sympathy in any way - I appreciate that several people have been recently made redundant and that I am no special case.
Although, If you would all be so kind as to help me in my quest for understanding and figuring out what the bloody hell I should do, that would be spiffing.

The story is this:

The company I work for is owned by a bigger company, who in turn are owned by a Very Big company.
The Very Big company is based in Folkestone, Kent (Near Dover for those of you who, like me, are geographically challenged)

Now, the branch I work for is in a building which is currently leased.
The lease expires in July and the Very Big company who has the final say on how the company money is spent have decided they will not renew the lease and will instead relocate the whole company to Folkestone where they have unused buildings going to waste.
This is all fair enough but leaves me with the unpleasant fact of facing up to being redundant once the lease expires.

However....

The company I work for are pretty good guys and have offered us all the chance to move to Folkestone (relocation pay equal to the redundancy pay) and to get new bigger, better and more highly paid jobs.
In short, if I move to Kent, I'll get a better job (probably supervisor is the word on the street) and more money (again, that's the word on the street).
Add this all to the fact that just recently I was talking about how I felt like my life had become stagnant and uninteresting where I was living and there's no dilemma right?
Even the missus agrees that Folkestone looks nice and that we should go.

So why the hell am I so confused? Why am I wondering what I should do when I know that the sensible option is just to move? Why do I not just pack my bags and go at the drop of a hat.

Today has been a very strange day.
To quote Arthur Dent - "I could never get the hang of Thursdays"

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism

Sleep on it. See how you feel after the weekend. These things usually take a couple of sleeps to sink in. You'll see things clearer by Sunday.

That'll be £25 please.

Folkstone iz da hood. Me and greedo once took a magicial train journey to kent and we met a strange chap indeed who said he was from the ghettos of folkstone.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

Sorry to hear that, but it sounds like your cloud may have a silver lining if you play your cards right (I'm going for the most metaphors in one sentence). I like Folkestone; I've been fishing off Folkestone pier a couple of times and caught the best mackerel I've ever tasted. Yum. Whatever you decide, I wish you both the best of luck. It may seem like a simple decision to make, but it will change your life so I don't blame you for hesitating. As Paul said, sleep on it.

And you can have all the above for free. (I'm just a pleb and wouldn't dream of charging you £25, unlike Paul, who is a true pro and worth at least £26 if you ask me). ;)

trust me mate if your wife is willing to go then your a made man, it mat not seem like it now but this is one of thoughs life changing experiences that only comes around rarely, jump in with both feet and if it all goes pear shaped you can always blame me, what have you got to loose. :?: :D
if you need further convincing to move to the breadbasket of england, thing town and country side in equal portions and people who would sooner talk to strangers than stab you for looking at them plus a whole lot better work ethic and better pace of life, i know i sound like the tourist board but i was born and raised in kent, some of the time anyway. :D

they say that there is a silver cloud in every lining...........

While it's bad news on one hand - at least you have an option which many don't get.

I was faced with the same decision in 2007 when I was made redundant and was offered a job, more money for a different employer who was willing to pay all of my relocation fees.

The family were behind me and I took it and it all worked out for the best. If you don't like Folkestone or the job after a while then you can look for something else. If you don't take it and end up with nothing on the horizon then you'll most likely regret the day, as well as putting a strain on your relationship.

It's never an easy decision to make but if you think about it sensibly then there's only one answer.

Yeah, I think Dat's right - if you decide against and then struggle, you'll always be wondering "what if... what if I'd made supervisor...!" - if you go and it's not all it's cracked up to be, well, you gave it a shot, you can always do something totally crazy... move to Mongolia or something...

Obviously, to me it would be far wiser for you to make a jump up North rather than daan saarf, but needs must

When you're looking over the Kentish fields, following the progress of your son Tarquin on his brand new mitsubishi quad bike, you'll look back on this day and laugh...

Besides, excluding Blackpool, the south seems to be the place to be for magicians... more's the pity :?

In the current economic climate,I would move if you can. You seem to have the support you need and as I understand it you do not have any children,so you do not have the added complication of schools, etc. Folkestone is a good location with easy access to London, Brighton, and Gatwick.

PM me if you like.

If you move to Folkstone make sure to come along to the Downtown Magic Club in Ashford.

I would say take the job. Two things can happen: you either like the job and the city, or you don't. In the first instance, you made the right choice. In the second, you are in employement while looking for an alternative- big advantage in a job hunt, it gives you options. Win-Win basically. And let's face it, you're not moving far - you're staying in the same country.
