The Mentalist Strikes Back!

Postby themagicwand » May 29th, '09, 23:32

It had to happen sooner or later...

Working at a wedding today giving palm & tarot readings, this guy says to me: "Now you're not going to fool me. I've watched 'The Mentalist'. I know how this is done."

He said, and I quote, "You read the person not the cards, don't you?"

"Crikey," I thought. "Rumbled."

You must be watching a far different version that we get here in my area. To me the show SUCKS and the actor playing the part has done far better with superior shows that got axed over the years.

I've heard very little positive on this show... PSYCH gets better support.

I do enjoy LIE TO ME and the new show MENTAL... they have some very interesting ways of looking at things; LIE TO ME being based in part on the FACS coding system and of course, Ericksonian techniques.

Anything that puts this theme into the limelight and makes everyone think it's all about applied psychology and nothing at all to do with trickery is good in my book.

Yes, the show is poorly written for the most part, and seems blinkered to all the golden opportunities it creates for itself, but it is lo-com-denom fare at the end of the day...

And I do feel the need to support the lead actor. Anyone that takes the lead in one of Romero's zombie epics deserves to have a golden career. :)

Lie To Me has gotten progressively better as it's gone on - it started as a poor man's House MD but now it's getting proper good.

I've never seen him in anything before this show, so cannot compare.

I work in IT and see many TV shows and movies where they make a complete shambles of what can be done with a PC. Likewise, my wife sits tutting through medical related shows because she works in that profession. It all depends on who's eyes you watch through. So, in that sense, The Mentalist, viewed as tongue in cheek fiction is fun and amusing. If it were being touted as in any way factual, I'd wholeheartedly agree with you, utter rubbish.

As it stands, I'll keep watching with a smile. :)

Wait wait, you enjoy, and let me just straighten this out-"enjoy" Lie to me? You must be watching a far different show than I am. (Bingo)

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

I love the "mentalists" suits and he's kinda cool, but the program does totally lack something...
