Oh dear.  I'm not sure this post is for real, but I'll bite

The quiche is one of the first thing I learned to cook when I was 6, it's making me desperately sad to read you're calling that tasteless c*** (not the best) in a box a quiche.

The worst thing is that when you mention it, the first thing you think about is the boxed variety.

I was loosing faith in the human race until I saw Fairiesnuff's post.

It takes 15 minutes to prepare one.

OK, so buy the pastry ready made if you want, unroll it into the baking tray.

In a bowl, mix 2/3 eggs with cream, a dash of milk, salt, pepper, a pinch of ground nutmeg, bacon (you need to cook it separatly first), and as much grated cheese as you can fit in the bowl. If you can't get cheese, use cheddar.

Pour the mix in the tray, stick it in the oven until golden. I stick it on between 150/180, it seems to work.

You can eat it hot or cold. Nice with white wine and salad.

As for any cooking, open the bottle of wine, and start sampling during the cooking process.

If you haven't tried it before / are vegetarian, you can replace bacon by smoked salmon. Spread it on top of the pastry and pour the same mix on top - NOTE : don't put salt in the cream mix, the salmon is already salted.

Same process for wine sampling applies to bacon and salmon quiches.

You can also make a vegan one, replacing bacon / salmon with leek. (you need to slice it in 1cm chunks - that's a small part of an inch - and boil them first).

Please someone tell me you'll try it over the week end.

This is just plain incorrect. Vegetarians do not eat fish, at least according to the Shorter Oxford dictionary. So if you eat fish you are not a vegetarian. Vegans, on the other hand, do not eat any animal product so would be entirely unable to eat a quiche due to the egg, milk/cream and cheese present!

Interestingly, for those of you who like such trivia, originally vegetarians were vegans. The term vegan was coined in the 40's by vegetarians that were getting pi$$ed off with people who claimed to be vegetarian but ate dairy products.

And surely one would want to saute leeks rather than boil them.

if you are french, then you are excused from my comments... :)

but you would be a pescatarian if you only ate fish-flesh and no other...

which means that you dont mind eating flesh thats been slowly suffocated, rather than a bolt through the head

anyway - quiche will be outlawed once i am declared uber-lord of the known universe...for being a terrible waste of pastry, eggs, cheese and bacon...

I stand corrected Gary, you are right of course :D The leek one would be vegetarian, right? I get confused with all the different types of lacto/ovo/vegan types of diet. I have some vegetarian friends who eat fish, what is this diet called?

Sauted leeks would be nicer actually yes, I'll try it.

Well assuming they ate fruit and veg then they would be pescetarian. If they ate only fish they would be bonkers!

I quite like quiche.

What the hell is "proper quiche"? All quiche is minging and anyone who likes the stuff needs to have their bumps felt. Jelly-like cheesy eggy stuff with bits of floppy onion and other unidentified green bits dribbling out when you cut into the crust. I feel sick just thinking about it. You people are seriously deranged :P

Aren't you glad you posted Replicant? You'll never live this one down, you know.

Hmmm... have you ever had an Omelet?

Quiche is just that, a very cheesy omelet in a pie shell, so don't give me this "real men don't eat quiche" routine.

When I hear some of these comments I just have to roll my eyes by the amount of threatened sexual identity that seems to flow... but then, I like having my "bumps" felt (though it's been years  )

I must confess to never having been served a quiche where the contents remotely resembled an omlette. I need to have a word with my personal chef. Although, I wouldn't dare call her that to her face! :D

I really like quiche, ok shop bought ones can be yucky but make it yourself and it can be really nice. I often make one for dinner in the evening and then have what ever's left over the next day cold, for lunch.

And of course, you can put whatever you want in it, bacon, tuna, mushrooms, sausage. Brilliant for using up whatever's left in the fridge.

Well, I've always been head chef in my house and have made many of both, I can assure you that they are basically the same critter, just a hell of a lot more egg goes into the Quiche... and with mine there's leeks, a variety of bell & sweet peppers, at least two different cheeses and some sort of meat... the French and Vegans can keep the Spinach (ewe! It was the one thing that always confused me about Popeye).

Of all people, the guy that taught me how to make Quiche was none other than Peter Pit (who was one hell of an amazing chef ... and for those that don't know who he was, learn about the history of the Dancing Cane, Long Salt Pour and Topsy Turvey Chairs)
