I'm totally with MagicWand on this one, I personally wouldn't do tricks with tarot cards. You're far far beter off learning how to read them and giving a short reading if you really do want to use them. If you are going to do tricks with them you'd be better off doing something that looks more like a 'spooky happening' rather than a magic trick.

I agree. In my limited experience, people are far more interested in a tarot reading than seeing a trick. However, I know of a number of tricks using tarot cards that also incorporate a reading, making them seem far more believable to the querent/participant. There are several in the Minch book I mentioned.

Listen to the Wand; he knows what he's talking about.

By the way, if you are intent on performing magic effects with tarot cards, then do yourself a big favour and learn the basics first; that is, learn the meanings behind the cards and a simple, three-card spread (or even just a single card reading) because you will get asked to do a reading if you produce a tarot deck, and if you don't know anything about the cards you're going to look a bit silly.

Trouble with routines like ACR is that everyone knows almost instinctively that there is only one Ace of Spades, 7 of Hearts etc in a deck of cards. People aren't generally so familiar with tarot cards. A lot of people I interact with and entertain have never seen or held a pack of tarot before in their lives, they've only seen them in films or on the TV. So, if you're making the Devil card reappear at the top of a deck again and again, well for all the spec knows there may be a dozen Devil cards in a standard pack of tarot. And if you have to explain before you begin that "look, there's only one Devil card in the pack" then whoops, there's the magic gone already.

And of course palming a tarot card or pulling off a DL can be troublesome due to the size and thickness of some cards.

actually, most of the people I'll be doing this for are friends of mine... most of whom are familiar with tarot cards.

The ideas are still very new and fresh in my mind, as I only just thought about it today.. I'm just starting to learn a lot of the more advanced card stuff as I don't usualy use them in my magic routines, they generaly scream sleight of hand nowadays, and my style doesn't really jive with that... people expect to see me do crazy occultish things and card 'tricks' generaly seem to fall flat with them once they've seen my other stuff, unless they're really really good... so I was thinking of how I could make it seem more occultish/spooky..

I have small hands and my tarot cards are slightly smaller then average playing cards so I decided to use it to practice my 'pass' today... and that's when the idea came to me to use them instead of playing cards for some effects

if you and your family are used to the tarot cards, then you can freak them out by telling them that it was actually playing cards that came before tarot..they've been around a lot longer than the new fangled tarot...

and, that:
4 suits - 4 season
13 cards per suit - 13 lunar cycles
all the pips add up to 365 - 365 days in a year

they should be more spooked out by that, than the humble tarot...

also, that cards were taxed, cos if you had a pack you were deemed able to earn money from them...

and religious people are suspicious of the tarot! pah...

if all you're doing is showing stuff to your family, and want to freak them out, just say that you think you've gotten someone pregnant and that you quite like the taste of heroin...

Heroin, i've heard That's a bit moorish?
a few things here, ACR with Tarot, you're having a laugh aren't you? I'd listen to magicwand with regard to KISS with Tarot,
I don't think he knows alot about the Tarot himself though, i've heard he dabbles a bit

I like Roger Curzon's The Souls of Previous Times from Sublimations. It's a tale of the plague with tarot eliminating victims until one remains. The curator is being modest and not mentioning his own work. Capricornian Tales has a nice routine with the major arcana. Blackhart has a good number of effects with tarot as well. Blackharts tarot made easy has had very variable reviews on here. His black book three I'd recommend as well. It doesn't really cover effects; more anecdotes from his nights doing readings. It is well worth a read.

And another thread that discussed this
