Many people were kind enough to offer suggestions for my first proper (with a hat) street gigs. Weather and other factors delayed my debut on the street, but I finally got out yesterday afternoon. I picked a poor day for it - light rain all day, and an important match going on. I performed in a small town in North Cork during their festival, but the town was deserted. About fifty people on the street, mostly kids and a few parents. So the conditions were far from idea.
However I did two shows, both roughly 25 minutes long. The first show attracted roughly 30 people, the second about 20 (it was raining lightly by then). Even with those poor conditions I pulled in 49 euros. I was very happy with that.
I am going out tonight and tomorrow night in a far busier town, and am hoping to top 100 euros each night. If that works I will have fine-tuned my show and will be ready to follow the festivals for the summer and reverse the effects of the recession.
My routine so far is Bank Night to draw a crowd (four people standing holding envelopes over their heads, with me pattering about someone winning cash at my show - that should stop people). This is followed by a routine combining ID and tossed-out deck. Then a six card repeat followed by cards across. I end on a balloon routine where I eat a balloon and produce a mouth coil.
The whole act (including a waistband amplifier and a fold-up stool to give me height) fits comfortably inside a briefcase. If I make my fortune I'll let you know. Thanks to everyone whose advice helped make it possible. Tony.
