I watched a programme about the old 1970s show "Nationwide" the other evening, and was strick by how much Richard Stilgo looks like an older Derren.

He certainly did. He started by doing consumer reports with the fragrant Valerie Singleton. Ended up a multi-millionaire by writing musicals.

That makes me feel quite old. It brought back a lot of memories.

Nationwide with the lovely Sue Lawley. Frank Bough and his interesting extracurricular activities. I remember the drubbing he got on Have I Got New for You.

I remember Richard Stilgo doing a royal variety performance, and explaining that the candle on top of his piano was there to prove to viewers at home that the performance was uncut, uncensored, and otherwise unedited.

The thing was gimmicked to suddenly shorten at random moments during the set. No comment was made - it just happened. I was in stitches.
