I think there are beings out there.. Just that they don't abduct people and fly around are planet. The ONLY evidence I have seen of aliens is just people with grainy video footage seeing something weird fly around in the sky (which in fact could literally be anything. So a fire fly or whatever.) Also I have feeling that we would have shot them down by now and would have had actual better evidence than some tourist with a crappy video camera.

As to whether they have ever visited? Well, someone pointed me to the site linked below, which certainly made me wonder! I lost several hours looking through the pages here. Pretty convincing stuff:
http://www.alien-ufo-pictures.com/ancient_aliens.html

This is more convincing: http://tinyurl.com/njankm It's a lifting body that works on the Coanda effect. It's movements are UFO-like and the Coanda effect has been known about since 1800! :D

I want one...that looks like it could be lots of fun to play with

I'm happy to accept that life will exist anywhere and everywhere that it possibly can. And that it's unrealistic to believe that Earth is the only place in the cosmos that can support life.

But considering how long it takes light to travel between worlds leaves me skeptical about the idea of any aliens ever visiting us. Sure, solutions might exist in theory, but even scientific theories can be rubbish, right? ;)

That's a central tenet to science. You try to disprove your hypotheses. If you can't. You publish, inviting others to try. If they can (or if they confirm your findings), they publish and the world learns. Theories are hypotheses that withstand this peer review process. It's a different definition to the informal one.

There is no doubt in my mind that there is intelligent life on other planets. This galaxy or otherwise, there is life somewhere out there. As to whether or not they have visited Earth, I doubt it very much. But I wouldn't rule it out completely; I just think it's extremely unlikely.

I believe this may have been covered in the pet hates thread... =)

I too am of the math based statistical likelihood principle that ET's exist and probably have visited us. Not sure about the abduction side of things however I find it more plausible than most other "paranormal" activities.

So far, the only life we know is terrestrial. But based on that, it seems safe to say that life arises just about as soon as conditions become even remotely possible for it to exist, and evolves to inhabit every available niche. So life, as such, should be widespread in the universe.

Complex life is something else, though. Bacteria had the Earth to themselves for thousands of millions of years before eukaryote cells (with a nucleus and complex structure) appeared. It was another 500-600 million years after that when multicellular animals, like jellyfish and simple worms, evolved. Life forms began colonising the land about 500 million years ago, or about 4000 million years after the earliest life appeared.

It was only about 360 million years ago that the Earth resembled what we know today, with soil and a rich variety of land-living plants and animals (still mainly insects and other arthropods). And then there was still a long way to go before the evolution of even basic intelligence, in the sense of being able to modify behaviour by learning.

There's also evidence that human-like intelligence isn't going to be very common. It hasn't arisen often on Earth. The only real candidates for this sort of brain power are the apes (including us), elephants, parrots, and possibly dolphins. What we call "high intelligence" seems to evolve only under social pressure, where a fairly large group has a complex social system based on individual recognition and shifting alliances. Without this particular social need, intelligence doesn't seem especially useful. The majority of species get on perfectly well without it.

So if we ever got to explore thousands of planets all over the galaxy -- all with liquid water and Earth-like conditions -- I'd bet most of them would be home to something like bacteria and algae, some would have visible aquatic organisms like worms and seaweed, a few would have land-based forests or something similar, and perhaps a handful would have complex creatures on the order of reptiles or mammals. It would take a lot of looking to find another human-like species with a complex culture, language, tool use, etc.

of course, they might not bother comming back here, if they have already visited.

Hell, just reading them sing hurts

Frankly, I think if they ever find threads like this one they'd be laughing their butts off.

the one thing that struck me as odd when they abducted me, was their total lack of butts. This, however does make the silver all in one suits hang so much better.
