Suitable for Radio?

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

dunninger used to perform regularly on radio - didnt do him any harm...and he bent steel rods on it...

its down to the radio interviewer i would have thought, if he/she is into it, up for it and very descriptive...pretty much anything goes...

Like I said I have a list of close to 1000 phone effects on it.
The most recent additons to my list and purcashs are Sixtet by Jack Kent Tiller - a book of two person phone effects and Juan Tamriz's Verbal Magic; a book of interactive effects.
Patrick Redford recently published Heptagon a booklet of phone effects but I haven't got that yet.
I'm sure there are hundreds of phone effects I haven't found yet, and many that are not published yet by their creators.

I too seem to have landed myself a gig on Radio and will be dipping into Juan Tamariz Verbal Magic and also bought the John Wade tapes. I'm going to put in the Danish Pachyderm but looking to see if there is something similar to that other than the kangaroo version. Be grateful if there was anything similar I could be pointed in the direction of , out but the rehearsal has now been brought forward to friday so I'm lacking time.

I've been on the local radio a few times to promote the shop and the one thing that is crucial and hasn't been mentioned here is you need to focus on doing magic, not for the DJ , but the listeners.

You need to do effects that get the listeners to ring or e mail the station. That's what people want. That's what people enjoy. You need to involve them.

The DJ should be merely seen as someone who helps the effect.

Picture duplications are good on the radio. Have the listeners at home get a pen and paper ready and draw something as well as the DJ. When you successfully duplicate the DJ's picture you ask the listeners if anyone drew the same picture. You'll be amazed how many contact the station. Also stopping the DJ's watch is good. Again ask the listeners to stare at a watch or clock and see if it stops when you stop the DJ's watch.

You won't believe me but people will ring up! Some people just like attention and to be heard. What can I say?

Anyhoo have fun whatever you do.

Good advice thanks, I'm in a trickier position as I'll be the only one and its pre-recorded :)

At least I can ring in !

If Edgar Bergen was able to make a living with Ventriloquism on the radio...

And that in itself makes me wonder. Do you think he actually brought Charlie with him to the radio station? Or did Edgar eventually figure out that he didn't need the dummy? I wonder if he bothered not moving his lips? Who would know?

Ventriloquism on the radio = stand up comedy!

Would you really have to be standing?

We had an equivalent in the UK, Peter Brough and his dummy Archie Andrews started out on radio but it was done as a live show complete with the doll. Sadly when the show transerred to TV it showed that Peter was an awful vent and moved his lips throughout the performance, apparently he'd forgotten that the audience being some distance away in a theatre doesn't apply with TV cameras and telephoto lenses!
