Spelling and Grandma

Postby FairieSnuff » Feb 8th, '10, 15:16

What IS going on with everyone highlighting on everyone else's spelling and grammar in their posts,

Yes I agree someone whose writing style is "wot is dat lookin" is rather annoying and yes, they should be at least readable.

So I put your instead of you're, APOLOGIES ! Jesus at least I spelt the damn word right.

It is rather getting annoying now, to the point where I can't (or cannot or whatever you say the word should be) really be bothered to respond.

I spelt check my posts (usually), I am polite but this is really starting to be just nit picking in my opinion.

Should I assume I am not welcome to post on this forum because I don't have degree in English language and I may annoy you with my writing style ?

Whatever.

Well said Fairysnuff :) It is getting ridiculious. Surely if we can understand what someones saying that should be all that matters. Moaning about spelling and grammar must be a bit off putting to foreigners aswell, they wont want to contribute for fear of ridicule if theyre spelling isnt great.

Also there are quite a few of us for whom spelling is a real difficulty; I'd hate for anyone not to post because they're embarrassed abut being picked up on spelling, grammar or syntax.

I'll admit that "would of" does drive me up the wall, but it's better than the alternative, which is fewer posters.

I'm afraid that I'm one of those who make the verymost mistakes in spelling and grammar.

These pedantic fads seem to come and go. I'd rather see posts debating magic than grammar myself. It's funny but the corrections often come from those who contribute less than those they criticise...

Given that we have a lot of members where the first language isn't English, it's understandable that some spelling/grammar mistakes will occur. At the other end of the spectrum are the very annoying garbled TXT-speak messages which are very difficult to interpret. As I've said many times, if peeps would use a spell checker to minimise the majority of errors then it makes it far easier to understand and respond. I think most of us can tell who is genuinely trying to make a valid point and who is just being lazy in the way they write. Specifically I’ve never had any trouble understanding Dale and many other member’s posts, I generally go straight to the nub of what's being said rather than counting the spelling errors etc. With some others those errors would completely cloud the content.

For what it's worth, I've never understood Dale, but that's never had anything to do with spelling.

In regards to the spelling and grammar thing I think most of it is in light hearted jest, although I have seen a couple of posts that seem quite malicious.

I do not really care, if the spelling and grammar is too bad for me to read then I will make a judgement call on whether the content is likely to be worth deciphering and go from there. If it is more a case of "messageboard mayhem" i.e. The words are written instead of said so open to interpretation then I would probably clarify via PM.

It certainly does not bother me enough to want valuable contributions by people to not be made, and as Fairie states, as long as it is not completely unintelligible it does not make a huge difference either way.

I get a bit fussier with books though as many people should have proof read the book before it goes to print and if it is a story it ruins my concentration. :)

For what it's worth I very nearly pointed out four separate grammar errors in the post that moaned at Dale for using the phrase 'could of', but I decided against it

i agree, and if you can't come up with a decent enough insult for someone other than how they've spelt (or is that spelled) something then you're nothing other than a lolligagger, a pantywaist and a berk...
