you can expose some potential mentalism methods just by going on amazon...and if you're lucky, by TM members in derren brown threads...

Iain.
Its not what there exposing. They have found a way of doing it that leaves you feeling like they are just talking the * out of all of us.

they probably are! who cares?! less than half of the people watching the show will remember much about it in a week, a good percentage won't care...

to quote the great Danny "Chill your boots, man..." *

the masked magician got better ratings, and who remembers what that wassock revealed?

*withnail & i

A lot of people. I was talking about Copperfield the other day, and half my audience knew exactly how he vanished the statue of liberty and referanced the "vanishing tank" by MM.

boons have been exposed, TTs have been countless times, change bags, tricks have...it doesnt stop people using them...

look at the show, The Mentalist - it showed the swami recently, there was uproar in the cafe over it...the dust has settled....

are people selling their swamis in massive amounts? of course not...

Iain, I don't mean to argue with you, or cause upset; but arn't magicians and mentalists meant to oppose exposure for all their worth?

It is I believe, its all fictional - about a guy who can really see the future and prevent crimes. But they did expose the s****i, which is annoying.

Er yeah - but surely just use a pencil rather than a fancy electronic looking pen...

you learn to pick your battles...what can you do against tv?

big difference between that, and youtube, and torrent sites...

being against a tv show does nothing...email the show and ask why they did it, that would be interesting...

I'm past worrying about it to be honest.

We cannot do anything about it and Iain is right, no one remembers.

I saw a client a couple of weeks back and somehow got on to the subject of magic and how it was an interest of mine. He said he saw a fantastic trick a couple of months ago so had looked it up on YouTube to see how it was done. I enquired as to what the trick was and how it was done. He said;

Do you know I can't remember now but the trick was really impressive.

It's been said before, it will be said again. Most people do not want to know how things are done and even if they do they usually forget the solution again. How many times do we have actual magicians on here asking to be reminded the name of a certain trick they want to relearn as they used to perform it and have since forgotten?

If we need to be reminded some of the intricacies of our own job/passion/hobby why do people get so upset about Joe Public being shown something? Just to end my rant, most of the time when a prop or gimmick is being used the audience will not know about it anyway! If a decent performer is showing any of you something would you realistically know whether they had used a TT, a b****t s****h, i***x or whatever?

The only time I have ever noticed the gimmick being used was when I was selected to take part in a show (not mentioning any names :P) and when I was handed an envelope I knew a NW had been used. No biggy I just smiled and was still amazed at the other things within the show I had not picked up on.

Yes it's annoying. No we cannot do anything about it. Us drawing attention to it does more harm than good. Better to ignore it and let it slip in to obscurity than cause uproar and draw more attention to it. :)

I'm reminded of King Canute (and boy, was I tempted to use the alternative spelling).

When the tide is coming in, there is nothing you can do about it. If you stand there, railing at it, you will just get a soggy (trouser) bottom.

Actually we CAN do many things about it.

I personally have been slowly degrading wikipedia's magical knowledge for years, as well as youtube.
You can patent inventions or even just standard things; if the more electronic i** pads are pentanted, then the Masked Magician (for example) cannot show them on tv.

Why do you think the Masked Magician never revealed David Copperfield flying? He couldn't get the legal rights to do it.

On the flip side these things are promoting magic, its keeping it int he spotlight, which is great news for us. It keeps people interested and perhaps insipres people to take it up which is a good thing in my opinion.

It is fictional, but the main character is supposed to be a professional stage mentalist who helps the police (unless it's changed wildly after the first episode and a half, which is all I ever watched). It does assume "mentalist skills" are more or less what Derren Brown claims to do -- expert body language reading, psychology, suggestion, etc.
