You wouldn't like the method, I promise.

There are two methods, both available for purchase through your magic dealer. And if you don't have a magic dealer, where are you from I'm sure one can be found for you either locally or on the internet.

Without sounding pedantic, surely they're one and the same??

Well, explaining how to make the trick possible could amount to providing a name of the commercially-available effect and an idea of where it can be bought.

That's not exposure. That's being helpful. :)

Okay, so a Google search took me two minutes to come up with the goods, but i realise that many internet users are search engine intolerant.

To make life easy for you, I'd recommend Googling the words:

zapped ricki dunn

The book seems quite affordable.

Good luck!

On a related topic, I remember going to local magic conventions as a kid, and seeing a product called 'Hot Spot' for sale at dealer stands that - as far as I'm aware - did an electric chair kind of thing.

It said it was an ADULTS ONLY product in big unfriendly letters on the packaging, which made it seem even more dangerous and interesting.

Haven't seen or heard of it since.

Anyone know what became of this trick?

It's one of those childhood mysteries I'd like to get to the bottom of.

Electric Chairs

Postby Allen Tipton » Mar 4th, '10, 20:12

Jonathan, as you are 19 and been in Magic since the age of 11/12: so

1. Zapped by Riki Dunn is the definitive book on The Chairs.

2. Easier & simply explained in 'Simplicity, Audacity, & Bluff', by the late Val
Andrews (pub. by Magico Magazine.USA) has 6 pages on it.

3. 'The Real Secret of The Electric Chairs' pub. by Supreme Magic is a simple
8 page booklet.

4. The Jumping Chairs Routine by the late David De Val is a useful routine but
not I think for you.

5. The Famous Electric Chairs & Other Hilarious Stunts by Eddie Buirke,
published when he owned Magictrix House of Magic is hard to find but
brilliant. I have suggested to him it would be well worth re publishing.
One 'Stunt' entitled 'Bathing the Baby' I have wanted to perform for many
years but my own El;ectric Stool routine, of some 35 years, might clash with
it.

6. There is also (again not for you) an advanced routine in 'The Mental Magick
Of Basil Horwitz. Volume 4, called The Hot Seat.

As you have been told, the actual secret will disappoint you, as it has disappointed others. You need great confidence & a showmanlike stage personality to carry it off. Do NOT do as one magician I have advised did--use a drawing pin!
It's wonder he wasn't taken to court.
In USA you can buy a special chair But this is cheating.

When someone first explained the method Paul Daniel's used, I felt like crying.
