Unfortunately, it seems that the universe doesn't actually preclude them; assuming that the theory of relativity is as good a model as it seems to be, "closed time-like curves" can be found in the mathematics. I doubt they would work in quite that way though.

The problem I have is that River was put into a time loop to save her. Which I can't see making any sense. Was she just repeating the same bit of time over and over, surely this is just the same thing as the piece of time just happening anyway? The doctor could just nip back to whenever this timeloop ran it's first loop and pick her up then, there's no need for any looping.

Yes, but with a time loop, the person rescuing River wouldn't need to be a time traveller themselves. All the time bending stuff is happening to River, so a bystander can come along in their own time stream and figure out a rescue plan.

thats what he did. the loop started as she reached the door, and said " I'm Sorry My Love".He nipped in just as she turned to go to it.

So you're saying there was no loop? there wouldn't need to be!

Yet here he is free to go back and actually whisper into his own ear.

So what's the point of watching now if he can just do that every time he get's in trouble? There's no element of suspense anymore.

But he has met himself before.

Incidentally, I thought the whole thing of the Doctor going back in time to set the scene for his own escape was very reminiscent of the Bill & Ted movies.

Which is nice, as Bill & Ted was so unashamedly inspired by Doctor Who (even down to the time-travelling phone booth).

And it's still Keanu Reeve's best work.

Reminds me of the 2nd movie, where they pretty much mention how they traveled back and set everything up, then performed a live concert for everything.

Aannnnd - Matt Smith appeared at Glastonbury with Orbital (playing the Dr Who theme) on Sunday.... There's the 'Bill & Ted' style live concert too!

*EDIT* Brilliant quote from someone on that Youtube clip....

"Isn't life unfair? I've been a "Doctor Who" fan for all my life & I might as well had a "I'm a t***" tatoo on my forehead ... now everyone loves it & I just look like a sad middle-aged man. ( At least my Whovian kids look cool !)"

LOL - I feel your pain, mate!

Yup. :D

And they did it in the first movie too - trying to get away from Ted's dad in the police station (stealing and hiding the key, setting up the tape recorder...)

Genius stuff. :)

I took advantage of a 2 for 1 offer in Tescos, and picked up a couple of Doctor Who books, to read to my little boy during the Summer hols.

I've just finished the first one, and I'm actually surprised at how good it was.

It's called Nuclear Time by Oli Smith, and it has some nice ideas in it - especially for kids' mainstream science fiction. There's also some nice characterisation there too. You can sympathise with all of the this-adventure-only characters, but there are no lazy schmaltz devices at play.

I should also have read it in secret before promising to read it to my (nearly) six-year-old boss, cos it's also surprisingly grizzly and violent and scary.

loved it!

Seems that quality control exists right across the franchise!

As a kid I loved Starsky & Hutch and used to buy the paperback books that were available. From what I remember they were thoroughly enjoyable pulp fiction of the highest order.

Funny thing about the Doctor traveling back to his own time, is that Eccelsons Doctor said it can't be done because of the time dragons or whatevers that supposedly fix time. But I suppose they gave the Doctor a pass this time because of the cracks in time and because they figured the Doctor would fix it.

Also I didn't get the time that the Doctor met Amy. Supposedly it was like 1980 something or whatever.. So when he defeated The Master and the TARDIS flew into space, he must have gone back a few years or something.
