New episode - Daemon’s Roost

Postby Mandrake » Jan 2nd, '17, 21:56

Bump!

Anyone else see this new episode? IMHO JC has lost his sparkle since giving up magic for a living, or it could be because he's now a married man! The scenes where the Mill was being emptied and old props chucked in a skip were presumably to underline that involvement with magic is now firmly in in the past.

Whilst the story was intriguing enough and the production values were high but the end seemed to suddenly rush in with unseen facts and the baddie was almost a shadow suddenly revealed. No idea what all that stuff was about JC having a brother but it looked like they were setting the scene for another episode at some point. Still not up to the good old days methinks!

Good news folks! The Drama channel, 143 on Sky, is repeating ALL the JC episodes right from the very first one. Time is 8pm and the first one is on Monday December 13th!

I never watched this series; preferring the radio to watching the utter dross on tele these days.

Is it any good?

What's the magic content?

The magic content was mostly exposure, at least in the early episodes. And Alan Davies is really irritating. It's not bad as a who/how dunnit, but the solutions are really far-fetched.

Many thanks for your prompt reply.

If it's exposure-orientated; I'll give it a miss. There's enough of that these days already.

I'll stick to Poirot on catch-up TV for my murder/mystery crime fix then.

Talking of which, Bob Bernard was in a recent episode (The Veiled Lady S2 Ep2) as a jewellery shop owner being robbed. He may only have had two words....."STOP THIEF" - but he made the most of delivering them with his usual enthusiasm. I imagine he was (quite rightly) a bit peeved that his name didn't appear within the final credits!

Then in The Disappearance of Mr Davenheim (S2 Ep5) Poirot demonstrated his magic talents, not only by solving the crime from his apartment; but by performing tricks to stimulate 'the little grey cells'. Credit went to Patrick Page as the Magic Consultant; although I've read that David Suchet actually performed the tricks himself. The TT handling was pretty appalling - but I could say this about the majority of magicians that I've seen handle one over the years - it's always been one of my pet peeves. However, the torn and restored paper was well executed - as no doubt was the murderer.

The Davenheim Poirot episode is great fun; I've seen it several times. The line about the parrot is hilarious. Pat Page also appears as the stage magician at the beginning.

JC is more of a whodunnit than a magic show. Any exposure is of either simple stuff or contrived trickery which fades from memory rapidly! I guess a lot of the early stuff will seem dated these days but it's still better than a lot of current programmes.

Well, despite my previous post, I've now become hooked on this series and started binge watching; whilst 'she who must be obeyed' undertakes her sterling night work in the NHS and has no control over the remote.

Utter dross on Xmas television, such as 'celebrities build a snowman', was undoubtedly a major influence.
