Dirty Chicken Eaters

Postby Farlsborough » May 10th, '10, 20:26

Just a pointless poll for my interest here folks, move along if you're short of time :)

Basically I'm organising some tickets for a hospital ball, and finding that the simple "are you vegetarian" question will no longer do! I suspect we're all familiar with our friendly neighbourhood Jews and their porklessness, and that this is also applicable to Muslims. I suspect both faith groups usually plump for the veg option at public events or parties, not being able to easily find out whether the meat is kosher/halal.

But there are the additional subsets of people who don't eat red meat for health reasons, or because they don't like the taste or texture... which I find very slightly irksome, because in the first case one meal isn't going to kill you, and in the latter - well - we all have to eat things we don't particularly like now and then. I personally don't enjoy pork all that much, but who cares?! It seems people think that because the host is willing to graciously cater to vegetarians, any meat related whims will be welcomed, hence "I'll only eat chicken" (generally bland cubed white chicken meat, i.e. "I'll only eat it if it doesn't really look or taste like meat").

Then there's the whole pescetarian kerfuffle...

So - click away!

I'm Jewish (converting anyway) and as such am supposed to eat kosher.

Kosher is hard to source so I eat vegetarian not because I can't stand meat or that I think meat is murder but because it's the easier alternative.

I eat all kinds of meaty goodness, but not being content with being easy to cater for, I don't like pork. If pork is on the menu I'd happily eat the vegetarian option, as to not be difficult

To be fair... most of the Jews I know will happily (maybe that's the wrong word) eat meat that they can't guarantee is Kosher because they don't want to be difficult.

Strict orthodox Jews might refuse but then they'll go for the vegetarian option (probably) but a lot of orthodox Jews are also fairly liberal.

Surely this poll needs a default "Things I eat happen to have meat in them" category. Is that doable?

Sorry Farlsy, I'm one of the picky ones you wouldn't want to invite! I hate lamb, it’s far too greasy and I haven’t eaten beef since John Selwyn Gummer rammed that beef burger into his daughter’s mouth to ‘prove’ that Mad Cow Disease was a fallacy. To be fair, I’d decided to avoid red meat anyway and I now find even the thought of eating beef very distasteful. That leaves me with pork, poultry, fish and any non meat dishes so there’s enough for me to live on one way or another. If I’m at a party or out to dinner where beef or lamb are the only options then it’s easy enough to apologise to the hosts and lay the blame with me for being a ‘funny’ eater.

I once tried going vegetarian on airplane flights simply because the inevitable choice of ‘beef or chicken’ usually meant only beef available by the time the dinner cart reached me back in coach class. Airlines seem to think that vegetarian means some kind of tortilla or fajita which isn’t really much of an alternative! Notable exception, American Airlines who offered a ‘Bistro Bag’ for internal flights, either a ham roll or cheese roll with various accompaniments, excellent taste and, for once, normal portions rather than those midget meals offered on long haul flights.

Hate lamb but you can't beat a good fillet steak in my opinion. I rarely eat other beef as all too often the quality is poor. Pork is too fatty so I mainly eat chicken and turkey with an occasional piece of fish.

Well my job involves reducing fresh products in a supermarket, so i generally get all the meat i can eat (see what i did there ;) ) for ridiculous prices, I'm talking rump steaks for 25 pence!

Got three whole chickens for 30 pence as well the other day, perks of the job eh!

I eat all meat, although not too fussed with fish or turkey. I did once turn veggie, lasted 2 weeks in the 1980's. A cheeseburger while drunk was my downfall.

Try not to eat lamb. But that's only because they're so cute. Although I do enjoy the taste. Lamb Jalfrezi. Mmmm.

I'm a vegetarian I started when I was eight for moral 'meat is murder' reasons but quickly outgrew that. I suppose it's mostly habitual now.

I eat all sorts of meat but not every day. I love a good roast but want to know where the meat is sourced as much as is possible. And stay well away from any products that use mechanically recovered meat like pies and cheap sausages. I grow about 50% of my own veg.

Shouldn't there be a choice for 'I only eat meat that has a face on it or someone named before it died'? I feel like I'm being excluded.

I eat all meat, love fur, fox hunting and harpooning whales

My favourite activity though is pointing at pious "meat is murder"type vegetarians wearing leather shoes or ignoring the slaughter of animals in the dairy industry.
