I still think there is some confusion in this debate between atheism and antitheism. Atheists simply don't believe in gods or have a religion, antitheists subscribe to the belief that religion and irrationality is bad. (Which ironically is a very irrational point of view.)

So I agree with Iain if he means antitheists are hypocrites for celebrating christmas as there is no logical reason to. But as it has been pointed out and is generally agreed on Christmas is a national holiday, it has existed in this land long before Christianity.
What Christmas comes down to is sacrificing an animal to stave of winter. Which may not be necessary now but undoubtedly has been a massive evolutionary development of our subconscious. It's become so instinctive we don't even realise why we do it, hence it's irrational, and if you think irrational is bad your a hypocrite, end of.

No not per se but it's definitely their rally cry. After all how can any belief be immoral? It's actions that are immoral. Whether your burning people in the name of god or freezing them in the name of science, if they were alive before you started your a piece of s***. If they were already dead your just a bit silly.

If it's the same anti-theist that I'm thinking of, he definitely doesn't need Christmas as excuse to have a couple of life-affirming celebratory drinks!

If it please the court, may I draw m'lud's attention to the somewhat counter intuitive idea that winter was actually a time of plenty. Lots of fruit, grain, bread, meat and drink. Summer, just before the harvests, was when people would have been likely to die of starvation.

The origins of religion can be traced back to the illusion of control people felt when certain rituals were followed by a good harvest. Instead of backing off and wondering if they'd made a mistake when the ritual failed to create better harvests one year, the tendency has always been to add more rules and special cases.

I thought you were asking why his attitude changed not why he gets away with it.

I think there has been some misunderstanding about the distinction between antitheism and atheism.
My atheism is nothing against religious people- although as it stands, organised religion turns me psychotic- or anyone having a belief, no matter how invalid I deem it: it is simple the LACK of a belief in a god.

But you're right- double standards are wrong. Like America and for that fact, Britain- 'It's not OK for you to be terrorists, but when we slaughter thousands upon thousands of innoscent people it's OK because we're right in our fundamentalism'... What were we talking about again? Oh yeah.. religion... again
