The Magical Hourglass(me)

Postby RBaroli » Jul 1st, '10, 14:42

Hi guys, this is my third post here, i think, and im posting here an amateur little routine of mine inspired by Roberto Giobbi's La Máquina Del Tiempo(The Time Machine).
There are no difficult sleight of hand or things like that, it's just a very simple routine.
I made the video in portuguese because it was for a brazilian forum, but i put subs in english. There are probably a lot of grammatical mistakes in the sub, but i hope its easy to understand.
I'd like to know your thoughts on it. How i can make it better, how to improve the text etc(in case you have enough patience to watch it lol). Sorry about my english!

Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oK2aUsqGnhM

No worries about the english. Here is how to improve, stop being so figity to begin with. Touching your nose, your hair, the edges of the mat, it is all very distracting. I had to watch for 5 minutes before there was anything engaging. You have 30 seconds to capture an audiences attention. A song has to grab a person in the first few notes, magic is the same. at 6ish minutes and 48 seconds, that whole manuever where you reached for the hour glass to cover the card was awkward and just plain bad. There was no reason to reach across the table with the wrong hand except to hide the card (and the dirty work). You need to do a little more research and come up with a better method, there are plenty of them.

I love the whole idea. I have an hourglass myself, I can actually stop the sand at any time. It is a great prop that sadly I've never used but always have in the back of my mind. I've always wanted to do a time based act.

In the end my advise is to keep at it, I think you are on the right track.

Thank you so much for your help. I only noticed the things you mentioned after recording the whole presentation. I really have to improve the cover of some moves as you said and I still don't like the text very much. I'll try to make another video with the same routine or idea, but improved. Maybe I can make it in english, I don't know... I only uploaded the video the way it is because it was for an online championship(wich i'll lose  ) in a brazilian forum of magic and it was the last day... It was almost like an improvisation.
Well thank you once more, I'll try to follow your advices. Can I have your msn?

Ha, ha... I thought I was the only one

Great, practical advice btw. So many of us, even experienced, allow subtle habits to creep in when we do public performance/speaking. I don't know what I'd do without the various coaches and directors I've had over the years.

Another one here :)

I agree with bmat, the introduction to the effect was a little too long, I started to lose interest before anything actually happened.
