Edit: just realised that guessing at the methodology isn't a good thing. xD

No, I don't think so, I think the quality of performers is going down, so methods are being spotted by spectators.

on line performances. You get someone posting some dire, slow, clip..
exposing and flashing all over the place. A bunch of muppets post " dude thats really cool" comments...

teh poster thinks Gee, i must be great....

they then go out and perform to somebody in the street,, or in a club, or in a pub, or in a school playground..

they are just as bad, if not worse than on youtube.....

and thus the standard of magic slips down one more notch.

and if you say on the clip.." sorry but that was Sh!te.." the trolls who said dude thats cool.. pounce on you and argue the toss.

Its a no win situation.

so.. newbies. If you are reading this, disable comments.because they do you no good.

Abandon your web cam, and join your local club.

I put out a psychological force on my Youtube channel a few weeks ago, but judging from the comments only 30% got the right card so I had to take it down.

Youtube is disasterous for magic, as litterally anyone can post a video no matter how retarded they are. Here is an argument in favour of euthanasia:

Seconded - I've come on leaps and bounds since I joined my local club - although, I would say that you do have to keep a sense of yourself as well, and not get bogged down in what other people think is right for you, if you have your own vision.

Back on topic,
I think that with the ease of youtube, and magic on the internet etc... More people are 'trying' magic without wanting to be serious in it. They see something, they learn the secret, they go out and do it to anyone and everyone.
I personally think it's fine for the general public to know one or two simple tricks, but I just wish they knew how to do them as well as I can. If anyone ever shows me an effect, and I can help them, I always ask do you mind if I give you a few ideas to make it better. Quality magic helps us all, magic that sucks damages us all.

Agreed. Do you think its something to do with the quality of practice these days ? I have seen many examples lately, here and on other forums, where folk seem to think practice means piddling about for half an hour. They proudly proclaim that they bought a 'trick', and within a few minutes they 'have it down', and the next thing theyre off performing it.

I don't think that methods as such are becoming more obvious, but people's access to information certainly has improved in the last ten years or so.

I'm not talking just about things that apply to magical methods (physics etc) but all areas of knowledge in general. Nowadays, if you are puzzled by something and you wish to find out the slolution, you can do so in a relatively short amount of time compared to 20 years ago or so. This will also arm you with pertinent information the next time you should confront a similar problem.

Uhm, well okay not totally related but I've seen some performances where I wish somebody would end my life. ie

Mentalis to spectator

"Fill my eyes with poison, then aim this laser pointer at them, then cover them with cotton, then coins, now a blindfold, now a metal blindfold, now a bag...

..me thinking, 'now a plastic bag, nice and tight around the throat now.."

Joking folks...sort of.

Yeah, though the only time I've seen that actually pulled off decently was a younger clip of Banachek doing it. What made it work, was that he was driving safetly down a busy street with a TV reporter.

I still don't think it was impressive, because EVERYONE knows you can see through the blindfold, no matter how much effort you put into it. Driving just means you must see.

Banacheks blindfold was nice though :p

Clearly you have done some extensive research on this having come to the conclusion that "everyone" knows that you can see through a blindfold.

Is there a way to run the settings so that posts from certain users don't show up when I visit this forum? I thought it was talkmagic, not talk-broken down cynic person.

This is the perfect example of the kind of start of a conversation from people that I just have no interest in ever talking to, who proclaim how incredibly smart they must be to everybody who will listen. They kind of perdson, that just because one of their many many suspicions turns out to be correct in the end, claim they knew it all along. You know who I mean, the people that say they saw the ending to the Sixth Sense coming from the start.

If you had more than one idea on the matter you didn't "KNOW" anything. It's not about removing all doubt, merely applying one is enough to let a rational person question the validity of what they have just seen.
