cardboard cylinders

Postby Lady of Mystery » Oct 4th, '10, 15:10

I'm on the hunt for a couple of cardboard cylinders that will nest one inside the other (no prizes for guessing what I'm making). The smaller one needs to be at least 6" diameter. I've tried making the tubes but they're coming out a little too flimsy so any ideas where I might be able to buy some would be really gratefully received. :D

go to a carpet shop and ask them nicely. That should sort out one of the tubes.
then make the outer one to fit. :)

or better yet, if you want something a bit stronger, go to a plumbing suppliers and buy a foot or two of plastic drain piping. it comes in many different sizes, and will nest.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

great idea, Dale. I'll pay the carpet shop and the plumbers a visit and see what they've got. :D

This may be a regional thing but here in the States plain old fashion oatmeal comes in fairly sturdy cardboard cylinders.

I was seeking decent cardboard or fibreboard tubes myself this last few weeks. If you want anything larger than a postal tube or wine bottle tube then you will find it difficult finding something that comes in two sizes that will nest together, unless that is you have them made to order. This is possible and there are a few suppliers who will do it, although they charge a hefty set up fee to set the measurements up on their machines. Their website is: www.essextubes.co.uk

Although carpet tubes look about the right size they are not really good enough as the wall of the tubes are very thick, meaning there is very little room for any load. Similarly piping from a plumbers merchant or builders merchant is plastic and therefore very difficult to get paint to apply so that it survives wear and tear.

However I did find something that will help you make decent perfectly round tubes/cylinders of your own to a large range of sizes very cost effectively, the steel rings that Lampshades are made out of only cost a few pounds and come in a range of sizes and you can get them from www.fredaldous.co.uk in Manchester.

Hope this helps.

Thanks too. I was thinking of using pvc pipes for that effect and building a routine with a plumber or tradesman theme as live in a very blue collar/tradesman/farming area, and expect it would be easier to relate that approach.
