We should reccomend props only. Just to be on the safe side.

Marvin's would be a good place to start.
Seriously.

Buy regular slates and maybe a couple flaps, some envelopes, index cards, and writing utensils then read "Behind the Scenes with the Mediums" by David Abbott. If you have access to the Learned Pig project, it's available there for free. Otherwise, you can try to get a hold of the old editions (1907-1915, I believe), the new paperback edition, or, if you wish to go deluxe, the Miracle Factory edition.

Abbott's methods will make hundred dollar slates unnecessary.

Currently Reading "House of Mystery" (Abbott, Teller), Tarbell, Everything I can on busking

I own, but haven't read the Houdini book, but from the descriptions of Abbott in the MF edition, Abbott was probably the better debunker/mystifier. You're in for some good knowledge.

Rik, you've made a rod for your own back by admitting to acquiring a copy of Derren's DVD illegally. While I don't see the need to hound you about it, it does mean that people are not going to be rushing to direct you to books or DVDs, for fear that you will then seek them online unlawfully. I appreciate that perhaps the incident with The Devil's Picturebook was a one-off, but people are going to give you a wide berth.

It is, however, a free country (ho, ho), so why not look here? http://www.world-of-magic.co.uk/newestHalloween.htm

Lots of ideas there, but please don't take someone else's hard work without paying for it again.

Well, even though you just got bashed a ton (to the point of excess-- bullying-- IMO), you could have read the Abbott book for free. It's out of copyright, Abbott is long dead, and it's available on Learned Pig (which is free and highly praised by many people of this forum). A hard copy book is still nice to have though.

This is a commendable attitude. It is not everyone who can recognise, and acknowledge, their unskillful behaviour.
