Cigarette & Zippo lighter flourishes

Postby DaveBonsall » Nov 24th, '10, 19:23

Hey guys,

Does anyone know of any resources, DVDs or publications for flourishes or manipulation with cigarettes and also for Zippo lighters?

Any leads would be much appreciated.

50 Ways To Rock A Lighter is about the best I've seen. Very professional.

Thanks for that Halfjack, I had already ordered it, but it wasn't available in the UK and the delivery time was after Christmas and I needed it a lot sooner as I have a deadline to come up with some moves for a movie project I'm involved with, so was looking for some other resources. Fortunately Spellbound (AKA Tony Jackson) has seen my plea and offered me his copy, so that's the Zippo side of things taken care of and I'm now concentrating on the Cigarette manipulation side of things. I know all the basic moves already, which was what got me the job, but I was looking for some new or different flourishes to play with.

So if anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.

Regards

Dave I don't know if it's of any use to you but iI have a book called 'Expert Cigarette Magic' from about 1939! (I'm not that old I bought it 2nd hand years ago)

Nothing in there I can see regarding flourishes... and to be honest it's probably not going to throw up anything for you but you never know I guess...

It has;

15 Envanishments (not vanishes but envanishments)
5 Acquitments (hand to hand transfers)
and a couple of productions

Then a chapter for lighted cigarettes;

12 envanishments
2 acquitments
4 productions

And a small chapter on a few fekes and gimmicks.

If you want it it yours for free. Give me a ring and I'll post it to you.

I'm sure they were the 1st you tickedoff the list but just in case they skipped your mind... there's John kennedy's self lighting floating animated cigarette effect... Steve Fearsons floating cig.

Cheers Neal

Cheers again Neil!!

Look forward to reading it.

Unfortunately the floating wouldn't work as the character isn't a magician, just someone who's really good with his finger/hands and as they are CGI-ing my hands to the actor's body, I'm sure they'd just CGI a floating cigarette if they wanted it.

All the best Neil and congrats on the anniversary!!

I am assuming that thats the Keith Clarke book being talked about.
It might be worth googling pencil Spinning, because most of the moves should be possible with a ciggy. You might need to construct a gaffed one from some brass tubing to get the weight, but it would mean that you could do things with it, that are not normaly possible with a paper cig.

Great idea Dale!!

Many thanks for that, it's an avenue that I hadn't thought of!

I'll give it a try.

Cheers again

Cellini, Art of Street Performing, New Orleans, Volume II DVD has Cellini's excellent cigarette routine on it apparently

"A visual cigarette routine features various productions, vanishes and reproductions. Cellini then swallows a cigarette, reproduces it, tosses it on the ground and ends up with cigar in his mouth. It’s a great stand-up routine and Cellini effectively uses cigarette smoke to enhance the visuals"

also available in his excellent but a bu**er to get hold of "Royal touch" book

An example of the type of routine here done by sonny holliday:

The full routine (sonny's rather than Cellinis)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNnqDNUu ... re=related (3.50 mins in)

Also there is Roger Lovins cigarette gimmick Break the habit:

i guess penspinng tricks wouldnt work because a cigarette is way too short.

do you know the master levitation system by steve fearson?
there is a trick where he has a cigarette in his mouth, spits it out and catches it behind his back.

or another one is where he spits the cigarette out...then it makes a 360 and goes back in his mouth.

or just throw the cigarette in your mouth...but i guess you already can do that.

can you tell us what the name of the movie is and when it will come out?

cheers,

Hi Trasher, unfortunately most of the above won't work, I'm not to do any 'tricks' as such, just manipulations, the character of the movie isn't a magician, just incredibly skilled with his hands. I now have all the moves that I need now though.

The movie is called Last Passanger. We've just finished filming the Teaser, we start the Trailer in Feb and then film the movie in Apr.

Here is the link to the teaser: http://vimeo.com/18222280 where you can see me doing some very basic Zippo flourishes.

About eight years ago I asked Roy Walton, as proprietor of Tam Shepherds Trick Shop, to recommend me a book of cigarette magic. He told me to pick up the Encyclopedia of Cigarette Magic.

http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic19440.php

Have to admit I never got round to reading enough of it to comment further.
