First rule of SEO: No one (bar Google) can guarantee page 1 on Google.

They'll probably manage it, but there is no foolproof method of gaining a first page rank unless they do it on a obscure search term (i.e. no one else is using and therefore is unlikely to be searched for).

It might also be a trick. They might just setup a Google Adwords campaign, which gets you on the front page at the cost of pay per click.

Also, be aware that most SEO companies will post your website on spam blogs. These are designed to be filled with search engine friendly text about the websites they are advertising. This does the job too except that after 3 or 4 months, your website link will go into their news archive and your rank plummets. You need good solid backlinks from reputable sites. You will achieve a lot more over time by arranging these yourself.

Be very weary!

What are your main search terms going to be?
I ask so I can look them up and see what you are up against. If competition is weak, save your money and do your own SEO. It isn't as hard as you think. There are sites that will test your site for SEO problems so you know what to fix. Then you just need to improve your content to make it search engine friendly and get as many links from other sites to yours as possible (the biggest contributor).

I am already on page 1 for magician Hampshire and magician Southampton, I just find it hard to believe the can get me on page 1 for all the south areas. I did ask them what other magicians were using their services but they wouldn't tell me!

They've given me a few cold calls recently. The poor guy was annoyed and sad I didn't take him up on his offer as if I was being the annoying one.

Their prices are through the roof though £150 a month was a 'deal' I was offered.

You can do a lot of SEO yourself simply because 99% of people don't even know about it, try using that to your advantage.

Oh god I hate it when they do that. I saw it on a Tonight program last year, and I nearly had a heart attack when I saw where the placement on the "front page" was...

God I hate bad SEO experts. There's some good SEO guys out there who do a great job and know what they're talking about, but there's a lot of snakeoil salesmen out there who will lie, con, cheat and frankly ruin your site and the whole experience of google just to get a fast buck
