Need some ideas...

Postby utd4life » Jan 31st, '11, 18:45

Hey again everyone.

As some of you know I will be performing some 'mentalism' effects on Sunday. I have some awesome stuff with ESP/Zener cards.

I would also like to include some sort of mentalism using a marked deck I have. I of course, am not asking anybody to reveal anything, but if anybody has some mentalism routines they perform using a marked deck bicycle cards, I would love to hear your routines so give me some ideas.

Many thanks in advance. Kind regards,

Daniel

here's an idea. read a book. i don't know, Annemann, 13 Steps to start with.
also, you shouldn't start with a method or a gimmick. start from what effect you want to preform, and then look for a workaround.
you can also move away a bit from just card effects, there's a lot of good stuff out there.

I am pretty new to mentalism. I have Corinda 13 steps to mentalism. But I have only just began reading that and won't be able to find an effect from their, learn it and perfect it by Sunday.

I want to do some kind of effect maybe like a tarot reading with playing cards, but I don't know how I can do that. That's why I was interested in hearing some routines other people had.

If you already have 13 Steps, you'll definitely find something in there and be performing it to some degree MUCH faster than any form of tarot or reading of playing cards by the weekend... I'd strongly suggest you go down that route if you really are in a fix.

You can perform ESPsycrets, which is a full mentalism routine, with either an ESP deck or regular playing cards.

I'm not aware of this routine or where to find it.

That's a shame. Google finds it fairly quickly ;)

I can find information on it, but can't find any performances of it. I guess I will have to buy it if I want to see the performance, never mind.

I'm pretty sure Annemann is free now, loads of effects in there.
but if you want to preform believable mentalism, you'll need more then a week to learn it.

Best of luck. I think I'll duck out of this one now.

Based on your previous thread, I suggest that you concentrate on getting your presentation sorted for the tricks you do know, rather than trying to learn anything new now. You commented that you know the importance of performance, so why are you trying to learn a new effect, when you have not yet mastered the performance side of what you already know?

If you do a few things well, you might be asked to do something more another time, and by then you can have a couple of tricks mastered for the marked deck.

Replicant always recommends a book called 'Hidden in Plain Sight' by Kirk Charles for marked deck effects. I have a booklet in front of me as I type called 'Manual of Miracles', which is on the same subject.

Agreed. Go for quality over quantity. There is no way you can learn something new and have it at performance level for this Sunday. Stick with the effects you already use and concentrate on doing them well.
Also, your 4th post in this thread isnt coming across very favourably - it sounds as if you dont want to pay for effects, but would rather watch them online, work them out, and then use them. Im sure thats not your intention, but its how the post reads.
Anyway, best of luck for Sunday. Let us know how it goes.

Oh no, not at all! I love buying effects, I have a lot of the Ellusionist DVD's, I recently bought JB Magic's 'A word in a Million', 'Beyond ESP 3', 'Z.A.P wallet' and 'Just think by Adrian Sullivan'.

Some of these effects I haven't taken out of the packets yet, as I am still perfecting other ones, and don't want to move on to any new ones yet.

A couple of ESP zener effects I have just been practicing I have known for about a month, and have practiced on family members already and have pretty solid performances, I just wanted something else to add on Sunday using a normal deck as I felt as if I didn't have much with just these few ESP tricks with zener cards.

I guess it's one of them cases where maybe less is more.

I use Just Think with my own twist to great effect... ditch the idea of having the spectator think of a card though. Use your imagination and link something else in... It's a great little miracle. If you've not taken that out the pack yet, get it open,

Are you serious?

Just in case you are serious I will make a suggestion. Get rid of the marked deck, get rid of anything new to your act. Go with what you have done, true and tried. Sunday is coming up too fast. If you must go get yourself an ID and present it with a mentalist slant. Get yourself a change bag and predict what object they are going to pull out, it can even be a card. OH! Better yet get a svengali deck. Certainly you can come up with a mentalism routine for that, heck it is already practically mentalism even though there a quite a few mentalists that will disagree
