Starting reading the Tarot...

Postby FRK » Feb 2nd, '11, 20:50

I have been studying the Tarot for a while and have all the card meaning quite well sorted in my own mind.
The problem is getting a simple spread of even 3 cards in to a coherent reading.
Any one got any advice on how to link card together or which card to put more emphasis on.

Thanks

It all comes down to practice and confidence really. I rarely dwell too long on the past, but tend to concentrate on the present and the future. The real secret is once you have learned the meanings of the cards, to forget the meanings (if that makes sense) or at least put them to the back of the mind, and let the story emerge from the cards. You can usually pick up threads that link one card to the other, then let your imagination have free reign and put together the pieces of the story.

Have you read Northern Lights? I like to think of my tarot readings as being similar to Lyra's alethiometer readings. Look for the story that the cards are telling you.

Oh,and watch the spec's face for clues! That'll tell you when you're doing good or bad!

Have you read Reader of Minds? It's always wise to have a back up system (ie what is coarsely called cold reading) for those times when the story doesn't want to be told.

I could go on for hours but don't want my post to get too long!

Paul's totally right. Don't worry too much about the text book meanings of the cards, instead just let your intuition interpret the cards. Quite often you'll easily spot a theme in the reading, love, money, health or family are the usual ones.

It does take a little time and practice but after a while you'll find it easier and easier to see what the cards are telling you. When you can do that, it's just a case of saying what you see.

One thing though, it's often easier to practice on people who you don't know. With people you do know, you'll find that you'll end up associating the cards with things that you know about the person and not give as subjective a reading.

Order this series, it will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about working with the cards and then some

It is very rare to not see these books in the office of the seasoned old Pros that do full-time counseling work as Readers.

For the Magic Buff side of things make certain you get ALL of Ron Martin's "Notebooks" (Tarot Reader's and Palm Reader's ... check with Loren at http://www.mevproshop.com as to availability) Ron has likewise penned several other Reading systems with bizarrist Larry Baukin that I highly recommend (also at MEVPRO)

Most decks these days are sold with a book that was written for that particular deck (or one can be purchased), this is because some decks have alternative meanings for the cards & artwork used. Traditionally however, the Rider-Waite is the most readily recognized by the layman and closest to the Golden-Dawn/Cabala & Hermetic based imagery popularized in the 19th century; most of today's decks are in fact based on this particular pattern though the "New Age" movement of the 1980's brought along a tidal wave of aspiring Artists-Witches & pseudo-shaman (taught by the Castaneda adventures no less) who've done their own decks that barely resemble "the Tarot" as it was established, even changing the shape and tossing in everything from Smurfs to Porn Star images.

Just out of idle curiosity where can you get the porn star tarot?

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Quick question

Do any of you guys claim to be psychic with supernatural powers or do you tell the viewer that it's entertainment at the end?

I tell them I'm a tarot card reader (or a palm reader). Which is what I am. I read the cards and tell them what I see. No claims to being psychic, I may claim to a certain degree of intuitiveness but as I point out it is my genuine belief that being intuitive is a very real human trait. I do my best to be entertaining as I'm usually being paid to entertain guests first and foremost, but I certainly wouldn't say "Hey, this is just entertainment" any more than a different style of magician would say "Hey it's just a plastic thumb".

No idea, but I think I can guess what the Ace of Wands will be.

FRK, if you like the Marseille Deck, you should try and track down Enrique Enriquez's work. He lectured on the subject to Tabula Mentis a few years ago, but I am not sure where you'd find his material on 'conventional' tarot readings. As part of the lecture, he explained how he uses the images to create an overall picture. Basically, he taught how to use a three card Marseille spread, which is precisely what you want.

His e-book The Invisible Tarot is available from Mevpro, but it's on a slightly different subject. If you took some of those ideas and worked out how to apply them to a real deck, that would probably be a good place to start, in the absence of a book on Enrique's actual card readings.

So... what do you find has the biggest impact:

Signed Tarot Card To Wallet?

Or the Tarot Card On he Ceiling?

Oh! So you want to play with your deck, eh?!

I honestly don't know if it is still being published, we never carried it in our store, but let me check with some friends in L.A. to see if they can still get it or not.
