One for the ladies...

Postby themagicwand » Feb 28th, '11, 16:16

I was working at a large casino last night as a palm reader. I arrived and entered the reception area, there to be greeted by a large vinyl poster displaying an old photo of me, my name, the date of my appearance, and the tag line "Palm Reader & Fortune Teller!" Then in a big exploding text box it said: "ONE FOR THE LADIES!"

I've been described in many ways over the years, but this is a first. I nearly fell through the floor.

:) Did you get it as a "amateurish, disparaging" ? :)
Maybe it was meant to be "fun".
Sorry about this, I am italian, maybe I did not get the right meaning...

I can imagine it would lose something in the translation. It probably is only funny if you're a native English speaker. I'm not even sure why it's funny. It just is.

It conjures up images of men taking their clothes off in front of screaming, slightly tipsy women for a start.

This seems like as good a place as any to ask this;

Is your client base for palm reading and fortune telling type things mostly women?

I have no experience in any of this but I'd make a (very uneducated) guess that a lot of men would be along the lines of "I don't believe in that nonsense" just because of the conversations I've had with people most men don't go in for it but most women do have at least some belief in palm readers and fortune tellers

It does tend to be women. It's a huge generalisation of course, but women are usually far more interested in the "psychic arts" than men. It is very possible to win men over though, and I've done palm reading and tarot reading in very male dominated corporate event situations. A bit daunting but if you're an amiable chap like myself very do-able. Once you've won the male element over they will become your staunchest allies.

Thanks for the reply, you are indeed a brave man to go into a male dominated corporate event and win them over, well done.

So do you have any musings on why women take to it a lot easier than men, or do you just take it on face value of thats just how it is

Understood.
Well, I can say I have been in some casinos here in Slovenia near Italy and that's true women were more interested in this kind of situation.
But only because men were playing around the casino :D
After some minutes the people asking for mind/hand reading were 50% women and 50% men...

They don't call him themagicwand for nothing... chortle...

I would never have thought of palm reading and casinos going together. Out of interest, do things like that come to you looking for a palm reader, or are you approaching casinos and the like and suggesting it?

Why do women prefer readings more than men? Who knows, really. But it is probably due to the fact that women are more motivated by emotion, nurturing, and those elements of the human existence that cannot be quantified. Men tend to be more about hammers and nails and hitting things. It's to do with evolution I guess. Women cared and nurtured. Men hunted and ate over-ripe berries with the boys.

There were some guys in the casino who were getting a bit rowdy about the fact that I had 20 women crowded around me. Security had to tell them to pipe down and go stalk a mammoth or something.

I keep telling you guys - learn to read palms. But you don't listen.

I must agree with the wand, i have found that reading palms is a great skill to have. It helped give me a good income as i made the change from magic into a mystery performer. An essential skill to have in your repertoire.

Men just don't want to be seen holding hand with another guy

Palm reading is really popular in the east. In London there are lots of palm readers working in the Indian community. My local shop has one working in room at the back.

Face reading is popular in China.

Both types are notorious ways for guys to chat up girls. Physical contact, gazing into our eyes, telling us things we want to hear. Not surprised guys don't want to get involved.

I think woman like readings in general because we are conditioned into believing spiritual things. I'm always surprised at how many of my girlfriends seriously believe that 'woman's intuition' in a real thing. Women are also told they are more emotionally in tune with the world. On TV, even in science bases shows, women take a near psychic role but instead of being psychic or emotionally in tune or possessing special intuition, they are psychologists, profilers, etc. Look at the women in Lie To Me, Numbers and Waking the Dead just for instance.

OK I've only just got here and I'm rambling on :D
