Other lecturers include Jay Scott Berry, Phill Smith, Paul Gordon and Tony Griffith. Along with Romany the Gala Show stars Jay Scott Berry, Peter Wardell, and Phill Smith.

The long running bi-annual convention, which will also be attended by a wide variety of magic dealers, will be one of the highlights of the the WMA's 80th year. There is ample free parking and hot & cold food & refreshments will be available all day. Whole day tickets, including a ticket for the evening Gala Show, are only £18 if booked in advance and £20 on the door. Phone Andy on 01305 833439. Sounds like you have an excellent day lined up! I well remember Romany at one of the Blackpool Conventions doing some stunning magic but she also talked Roy Davenport and John Archer into acting as her bare chested Arabian Nights style assistants!

Very tempted to attend. I'm very new to magic, although been contemplating starting magic for a couple of years. And decided to take the plunge and start.

Would this be beneficial for a beginner?

Hi ridl3r

A convention is probably the best place to start. Top magicians telling you how they do it, dealers to suggest good effects, DVDs etc. to start with, lots of magicians from beginners to professionals only too pleased to recommend what to do next.

When I went to my first convention I was struck by how approachable even the top stars are. Not like football or golf say where you never get near them! At Kinson next Sunday for example, Wayne Dobson, who has starred at the Royal Variety Peformance, will be sat [sadly] all day in his wheel chair at his table & pleased to chat to any delegates.

Now I would say all that.......I am the WMA publicity officer! Ask for me [Alan Chitty] when you get there & I will introduce you to some interesting people to talk to. That offer goes to anyone else reading this too.

I can show you my new effect BEHAVIOUR PATTERNS marketed by JB Magic - amazing & dead easy to do. I might even persuade you to buy one!

Thanks very much for the reply. It seems like a great day, and with it so close it'll be stupid for me not to go!

Welcome to the WMA

Hello, Ridl3r,

Just to say that I attended my first WMA convention 6 years ago and only _slightly_ knew 4 club members (having only attended 2 WMA meetings by then). So once I arrived, I ended up talking to lots of new people who shared my passion for magic. Now I guess I know a whole lot of people in a number of clubs. Alan is right about a convention being one of the best opportunities for magicians of every level to listen to great lectures, see excellent performances, watch dealers demonstrate their wares before buying, meet other magicians and get inspired.

If you don't see Alan first, look for me once you arrive. I'll be the lady with the blue chain of office.

The WMA convention is one of the friendliest conventions in the UK, I'm just gutted I can't make it this year :-(

Have a good one!

There are now only 6 days to go before The Wessex Magical Association One Day Convention on the 3rd of April 2011. The location is the Kinson Community Centre, Pelhams Park, Millhams Road, Bournemouth, BH10 7LH

The dealers attending have been announced since I last posted. They are Adrian Sullivan, Dave Forrest (Full 52 Productions) Jay Scott Berry, Mike Danata’s Magic Studio, Paul Gordon, Phill Smith, Playtime balloons, Razamatazz Magic, Magic Tao, Wayne Dobson & Zane’s Magic Shop.

Mike Danata's Magic Studio is in Boscombe, near Bournemouth, so very handy for you Ridl3r.

Phill Smith who lectures at 2.00 pm is perhaps the hidden gem in the programme. Although he is much experienced & has lectured extensively, it comes as a surprise to learn that he has never lectured at a convention before. Phill is author of the acclaimed Mitox, Yokai and Mokele handbooks to creative mentalism and his lecture will expose the secrets of performing engaging mentalism and mental magic. With a focus on realistic practical methods and impactful presentation, Mitox mentalism is intent on delivering real-world experiences to real people. Phill offers a range of material suiting everyone from hard-core mentalists to magicians keen to take advantage of the 'mental' buzz. He promises, ‘’You can expect tried and tested jaw-droppers that will work for you.’’ Other lecturers are Jay Scott Berry, Romany, Paul Gordon & Tony Griffith.

Card fans will be pleased to know that the WMA’s own David Carre is presenting a close-up magic session at 5.00 pm. Also, the dance group Storm have been added to the Gala Show programme. This completes an all star line-up which is as good as, and perhaps better than, anything the South has seen in many years.

During the day, as well as a raffle with lots of magical prizes, there is a free to enter competition in the form of a Magic Quiz. A quiz form to be completed as you peruse the Dealer Hall, will be in your Programme. Again there is a magical prize.

To remind you..... Parking is plentiful & free, Food & Refreshments will be available all day and finally, the bar will be open from 12 Noon. Full details are also available at http://www.wmagic.co.uk/Convention/convention11.htm

Just turn up, pay £20, & enjoy a full day of magic from 9.30 am till about 9.00 pm when the Gala Show will finish.

Do not hesitate to contact me with any queries.

Alan

PS. Did you know that Peter Wardell who appears in the Gala Show is newly crowned as The Magic Circle's Stage Magician of the Year 2010/11.

Planning on coming down with my girlfriend.

I'm just wondering, is the day split in two? With the Gala show towards the end...?

Full details on the web site.

Convention finishes 5.30 to 6pm. Gala starts at 6.30. Just time for a snack in between.

Sadly I am now incapacitated so cant go! The Convention only happens once every 2 years & I miss it. Roger Barton will be at the WMA stand so talk to him. Also Jana the President will be delighted to welcome visitors.

Show was really good too, good variation. Everyone was really friendly!
