Famous amateur magicians

Postby Jadoo » Mar 19th, '11, 21:35

I'm interested in famous entertainers who used to be, or still are, magicians.
So far I have found out about;
Stephen Fry, as described in his autobiography.

Woody Allen, in a Parkinson interview.

Lewis Caroll and Bob Monkhouse, according to the venerable John Fischer.

Neil Gaiman mentioned he studied coin magic for awhile in the back of 'American Gods.'

Rudyard Kipling asked to become a member of the magic circle.

Orson Welles ( he often referred to himself as a magician. On youtube there is a Jimmy Grippo clip where Welles is being shown a card trick, and looks mighty put out!)

Dick Cavett on his on-line blog.

Does anyone know of any other famous former magicians? And where did you hear of it?
Thanks.

    Isambard Kingdom Brunel was a magician. He almost killed himself with it infact, swallowing a coin!

    Muhammed Ali was well known as a magician. He did tricks at press conferences, he was doing the Balducci levitation years before Blaine. He even performed magic on one Parkinson appearance. He still does a limited amount of tricks.

    He loved performing for kids who hung around his training camps. I believe that he was a member of the Society of American Magicians. I have seen some great pics of him in his performing cloak.

    As a side note his great grandfather was an Ennis man (my home town) and we had him over last year to give him the freedom of the town. A great day.

    Woody Allen as a hypnotist: three hours of frantic pleading and a full refund.
