Designing and Publishing a Custom Artwork Deck from Scratch

Postby Alex_Haines_2K11 » Apr 6th, '11, 19:47

Hey everyone

I'm currently in the early stages of designing a custom artwork deck and would love for as many cardmen (and women!) as possible to share their thoughts with me, see what I'm up to, chip in with opinions, take part in polls, and hopefully be pleasantly surprised at the finished product by checking out my blog here... http://customdeckdesign.blogspot.com/ I want the design process to be as interactive and a shared experience as possible.

This is a big challenge for me, done entirely in my own time, out of my own pocket, and motivated by my passion for playing cards and custom artwork.

I thought it might be of interest to some of you to see the process and challenges I go through to get from a scribble on the back of a torn piece of paper to a commercial sized print run on casino-grade stock featuring playing cards with totally original fronts, backs and tucks, of a high standard of artwork and design quality and outside the confines of a swish design agency or a successful magic production house.

Hope to see some of you at my blog!

Thanks

Alex Haines

Wow, nice project!

Have you looked into the economics of it? It's not cheap to produce custom decks.

That back design is very striking, I can see it working. Are you planning to make it a marked or one-way design?

Personally I'm not a huge fan of skulls on cards, it just seems to me that there are plenty of skull-themed decks out there already. But it shows there's a market for them so if it floats your boat then don't let me stop you!

Good luck!

Hey user24!

Thanks for the input. The "skull debate" is one that has cropped up in a bit more depth in another message forum, and I shall be addressing it in a blog post very soon! So be sure to check the blog for it :-)

As for the economics, yes I have a working quote from the USPCC and no it is not cheap due to the volume required to print however per deck it really isn't bad and well: it's got to be done really hasn't it?!?

The dek will be a classic symmterical back with a white 5mm border in the style of bikes and tallys, no marking, no one-way designs.

Thanks for the response!

Alex :-)
