its not a matter of age, its experience and ability.

what kind of magic do you perform?

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Agreed, it really does depend on your experience and what you do. I always tell young performers to get plenty of experience before charging money. You need a solid set(s) before you even consider charging. You may want to do some shows for a local hospital or care home. Get lots of experience because it only takes one bad show to potentially ruin your chances of getting more gigs. By doing some free shows you may get good publicity and begin to build up a nice rep in your area.

As a rule corporate clients want adult performers as a corporate crowd can be tough to deal with. Your best bet is to try a local restaurant, some will allow junior performers while some may not.

I used to perform at children's parties when I was 14-15. This was through friends of my parents etc. Word spread (slightly), but not enough to actually make me much money. The cost of the equipment etc was vastly more than the pocket money I earned. Still, it was a good way to get experience.

No age restriction. If someone wants to pay you to do magic, take the money.

:)

I did my first paid gigs at around eighteen, but then took a break and got back into it in my mid twenties. If you feel you have a good show (in terms of entertainment) then don't be afraid to accept a fair fee. You are the best judge of that, but there are really no age restrictions. Best of luck with it.

Joking aside, do you understand the general point that russpie is making?

I don't think that his post was quite as ominous as you may think. He's joking, I'm sure. The point he's making is to do with being paid for performances when not ready.

For example, say you were an amateur somewhere like, for example, Sussex. There are lots of professional magicians in that area. Some aren't too successful, though, and have to dabble in other less respectable areas of business to make money. When amateurs charge very low rates (e.g. £6.66) it puts even more pressure on these professionals.

Another side effect is that people are unimpressed with these cheap and not-so-good amateur performances and decide to avoid hiring magicians in the future.

Of course, those at the top of their game probably don't care about what amateurs do. But it's an opinion that some hold and I'd hate for you to misinterpret russpie's point (as I see it, at least) as being a genuine threat. I can't imagine using that particular magic prop is going to kill anyone (unless you use it on an aggressive bystander).

Hope that helps,
T.

Why not do free shows. That is what I plan to do when I have the experience under my belt to perform for wider audiences (one day... )

Heheh. I love it when you waste your time on me.

It's a sunny day dude, get outside, smile, enjoy life.

I can imagine you in a darkened room cackling at that HILARIOUS 6.66 joke!

Nice one!

I've just popped in from the garden for lunch. But thanks for worrying about me and my life :)

I'll let you get back to yours now, sitting on a couch reviewing beer and porn. Good on you.
