PK ring sizing - solved!

Postby Robbie » Jun 8th, '11, 21:27

Thanks to very skinny fingers, even the smallest PK ring is too big for me. As has been discussed before on TalkMagic, the rings can't be resized.

I was making do with one of those little plastic tubes that slips over the ring, but they don't look very good. They also allow the ring to slip and twist, which can ruin an effect that depends on polarity.

But recently Colin bought a tube of "Cushion Solution", which is a sort of clear silicone goop that you dab inside the ring and build up as much as necessary to get the fit you want. I've just cushion-solutioned my PK ring and it fits great now.

Cushion Solution isn't easy to find, but I suspect it's identical to the silicone craft glue that's used in decoupage, which you can find at any craft supplier.

Does it stink to high heaven and dry semi-opaque? If not, it's not silicone glue (and according to the product descriptions, it dries clear). It sounds closer to glue gel, which can also be used for 3D decoupage, which also smells (but nowhere near as bad), but dries clear. I'm not sure if it stops being sticky once dry - I shall have to experiment!

Have you ever thought of going to a jewellers. They can put a small clip on the inside to make the size smaller. I dont know if this would be suitable.

It had no discernible smell, although I didn't go out of my way to sniff it up close. Not exactly crystal-clear, but nearly transparent, much clearer than semi-opaque. Dries in about an hour to the final rubbery state, and isn't the least bit sticky once it's dried. It would also be very easy to pull off if you ever want to get it off the ring.

It's certainly silicone-based. The tube lists the ingredients, and two are silicon compounds. I'm assuming (with my very limited chemistry) they react in air to form the finished product.

I went all over town looking for a jeweller who could install a clip, and there weren't any around here. All they could suggest was plastic tube resizers, though none of them actually sold them.
