The etquette of subtleties

Postby Vanderbelt » Jul 18th, '11, 14:33

Bit of an odd one for you folks....

Have any of you suggested subtleties/minor improvements to a creator of a commercial effect? If so, how did you go about it?

There's an effect I perform regularly and I (very humbly) think that my slight variation in the performance adds a great deal and would like to share my thoughts with its creator but don't want to come across as arrogant. I mean, it's not as if I have any best-selling books or DVDs. Ok, so I perform some but still....

Any thoughts?

A good developer would never tell you that there's only one way to perform their effect, and will always be open to suggestions. Drop him a line and explain that you use his effect and that you've come up with a variation that he might like. He'll probably be interested in your subtlety, even if it's not big enough to put out an addendum.

I agree. No trick is ever finished and if there is a way to improve it I'm sure the creator will appreciate your feedback!

Cheers guys, I was mostly curious as to whether there was any established or accepted etiquette when doing so, any unwritten rules so to speak.

Just drop him a line with your thoughts. I've done this myself a couple of times and always had a nice response back.

I've had people get in touch with me too about my effects and tweeks that they've made to them, it's always nice to get feedback and possible ways to improve things.

In fact, suggestions are a great way of creating new things. The FMT-2 came from suggestions on how to improve the FMT, for example.

Several of the reviews and discussions on TM have impressed the innovators enough so they incorporate he suggestions in later issues of the effects.

I have always found people approachable. When you buy some of Carlyle's DVD's he'll even email you an update of suggestions he has received from some performers if he thinks they are strong enough to share.

Go for it, what have you got to lose?

I've been featured as a contributor in the past by adding my own twist on effects. As said, there's no single way to perform anything... and creating a unique slant is indeed something the originator will be receptive to, I'm sure.
