Sleight of hand card tricks

Postby willogrady » Jul 24th, '11, 20:18

I was wondering if any one could tell me some names of some sleight of hand card tricks that have a really good effect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVJC-n398MI
This is me doing a card trick and I hoping to make many more videos and have some routines ready to film and upload so it would be nice if you guys could watch that video, like and subscribe.

Hey Will,

The move is quite cool - very "Dan and Dave" ie I'm not sure how practical it would be in the real world of performing.

as for requesting help with tricks, I'd post an introduction first, explain who you are, what magic you do, who you like (regarding magicians) etc ... this way you are more likely to be greeted with a wide array of video, books, dvd packages etc ... right now it seems like you could be looking for names so that you can find a youtube video of a webcam magician explain how its done with no proper instructions :/

Yeah thanks for the advice I shall post an introduction about myself. This move is the cardini change and works very well in real life situations I've done it many times and also added it into routines. Thanks for the help.

to be honest i'd suggest gettting a few books or DVD's and learn from there..... there's so many card tricks out there that to ask people to start reeeling off names is like asking them to start counting grains of sand.

i have no idea of your skill level but i personally recommend sal piacente's expert card magic....... or true astonishments by paul harris..... 2 of THE best pieces of material i own and both contain some very good effects

Thanks a lot I'm definitely going to be looking into buy these. I've seen a couple really good DVD's but the best by far has been Derren Brown's The Devil's Picturebook. If you haven't seen this then I highly recommend it. I didn't realize how skilled he was with cards until this, I just thought he did psychological stuff.

You may enjoy Expert Card Technique, a great book which i learned alot from. It is usually around £10.
You have a nice version of the Cardini Change, but the clean up needs a bit more work to make it smoother. I like what youve did with it though :)

Yeah my cleanup was fairly horrible but I've noticed only magicians notice it because many of my friends have seen it and don't have a clue how it's done. I'll definitely have a look into that book as I've heard of it before and it only ever receives praise.

Yes, when done live the clean up is done on the off beat after the surprise of the change, so most people wont notice it. Personally i still like to get everything down smooth though, that way on the ocassions you are being ''burned'' there is still nothing to be seen :)

Will, I hope you don't mind me being critical here, but please understand the situation that you are in. That was not you uploading a magic trick. That was you doing a single sleight, at a beginner level to a webcam. There is a huge difference between the two. It's best not to be dishonest to ones-self going forward.

There are a couple of books I would reccomend you attempt to pick up. One would be

The Royal Road to Card Magic

written by Jean Hugard and Frederick Braue.

The second is

The Encyclopedia of Card Tricks

written by Jean Hugard and JJ Crimmins.

These two books will give you a trememndous starting base to move on from.

The worst place that you can learn stuff from is Youtube. The reason being, nobody on there knows how to actually teach you "how to be a magician" they just tell you how to move your hands, and that is not being a magician.

I will have to kind of agree with Arkesus here. The youtube clip was just a slight performed for a webcam, and it was much like all the other webcam magic videos on the internet. Personally, if I was you, I'd not bother with learning magic to film for youtube, I'd learn it to perform in the real world, and if you really feel the need to record it, then record you performing routines to real people. You'll get a better reputation from that than what you've uploaded so far.

As for resources, what's been recomended are great, and as you learn more, you'll find you won't be usingflashy slights like the cardini change as much, they are just for show mostly and you wouldn't see many real magicians using them very often. Well, unless they are purly visual magicians, however, to do that kind of magic, it still requires a routine and a hell of a lot of skill. Skills that take years to gain.

I completely agree with you both it isn't a difficult trick but to a normal person the cardini change is amazing because it is so fast. I want to upload some routines I have been working on for a while and see what reception they get before using it in real life and in front of people. The cardini change was only uploaded as a way to lure people to watch the video and subscribe so that when I upload my routines more people will see them and comment and from these comments I can see what people think of my routines. Thanks everyone for suggestions on what material I should read and watch. I will be sure to look these up.

I'm afraid you're not quite getting what I mean. You shouldn't do things that way round, practice until you have it right, then perform it to people. Forget the whole youtube thing. It doesn't send out a good image. It says look at what I just learned, not I'm a magician, this is magic.

Not only is it just a bit too "teenager in his bedroom", performing tricks to a camera just doesn't work, you can't misdirect it or really perform to it.

Also, I do think average people think the cardini change looks good, however, it is just a slight, you shouldn't just show them one move, you should creat your own routines to perform. Otherwise again, it'll just be sending out, look what I can do, rather than this is magic.

I'm sure most people would agree with this.

I thought you were looking for feedback on your technique, i didnt actually realise you performed this as an effect. How do you present this ?
As has been pointed out a colour change is usually intended to be used as part of a routine, rather than a stand alone piece. Why do you make the card change ? There should be some sort of context.
A simple effect using the change would be James Lewis' Inversion. Another using a dup aswell would be a transposition. The top card is shown to be say, the ace of spades, which is tabled (the card case could be placed crosswise on top if you wish). The next card is shown to be the ten of hearts. A snap of the ten and it instantly changes to the ace, and the ten is now under the card case. The ace could be signed by the spectator. The workings should be obvious. The basic plot is standard.
Obviously suitable patter should be used etc, its just to illustrate what we mean about using the sleight in an effect, rather than just doing a sleight.

Just from looking at your DL, and your handling of the cardini change, has told me that you are not at the level that I would expect a person to be who is thinking of showing magic to actual people. This may sound harsh, but it is the truth. You still have much much more practice needed before you will be ready. You should not be performing your moves to people just because you can do them correctly, you should be waiting until you can't possibly be doing them wrong.
