How to turn a card face-up?

Postby user24 » Sep 16th, '11, 19:24

Heya,

Been playing with one-handed (charlier but I never can pronounce that) cuts, and came up with a way of cutting the deck such that the bottom card ends up face up and in the middle.

Now it's not very practical - the one-handed cut looks a bit like a move at the best of times, and doing it the way I've come up with is a bit fiddly and can result in the bottom card being flashed to the spectator while you make the cut. So probably a non-starter really.

But I like the reveal of fanning the deck and their card is face up. So can someone point me towards a way to do that? It's not something I remember from RRTCM.

In case you're interested, I recorded this quick vid of what I'm currently doing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iGtsFtcYJc

I came across this "reversal" whilst practicing the charlier cut, but soon saw it as a glitch in my process and dismissed it as a practical move.

RRTCM has a chapter on reverses.

The Charlier Pass is a much under-appreciated move which doesn't deserve to be relegated to a cut or flourish. I learnt it many years ago from "What's New in Magic" by Walter Gibson, and if you can find a copy (I know it's in TMC's library) it will show you the possibilities.

Braue reversal then just casually swivel cut the deck, carry on with some patter and riffling the cards then reveal later.

If you are okay with passes, you could get the card to the bottom of the deck, half pass it then follow that with a full pass, bringing it to the middle. I know not everyone is comfortable using passes but it is a simple, direct way of doing it.
