There I was minding my own business - when I saw this ......

Well it's prob not as close as it appears, as one of the planes is slightly larger than the other, indicating it was flying lower - it still looked pretty scary though if you ask me ....

See what you think:

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Looked stupidly close to me. Wonder if any air control staff got a spanking for it? You should email the video to the Sun newsdesk - bet they'd use it, at least on-line - and you'd pocket a few quid too! Bonus!

With the video being on YouTube the chances are the papers have an agreement/fee in place to use the footage. I doubt he'd see a penny for it. YouTube's Terms and Conditions suck.

Probably not all that close, really. The Oracle (Wikipedia) tells me they only need a vertical separation of 300m (1000') or 600m (2000') depending on location and altitude. 600m is a lot closer than most people would imagine it to be. I doubt there were any ATC spankings about this.

The planes are actually quite a considerable distance apart, but due to parallax they look close. If you look at the lower plane the twin vapour trails are far further apart than the upper plane, indicating that it is at a far lower height. Also, it's speed relative to the upper plane indicates it is far closer to the observer on the ground. The reality is that the planes were widely separated, and never in any danger of sharing a flight path.

That's just facts. You can prove anything with facts! :D

I was on a flight to New York and got talking to a guy who worked in aviation.

He said they are always discussing the feasibility of further reducing the mandated distance between craft. In a typical "Noo Yoik" accent he said, "We just want more stuff in the sky, y'know"
