If you are interested in cards I would look at picking up some self-working material and some instruction on sleights to help mask the setup/mathematical principles you will use with it.
Karl Fulves has been mentioned so definitely investigate his books. Along with it I would recommend 'Scarne on Card Tricks' by John Scarne. It is a wonderful book that has hundreds of clever little gems in there. For sleights pick up Royal Road. Now it isn't the best beginners book in my opinion regarding ease of reading, but along with the Fulves/Scarne books, it is wonderfully inexpensive. You can pick up all three books for about twenty pounds, which is a reasonable figure for someone who is trying to work out if magic (or even card magic) is for you.
