i want a book for christmas, but what?

Postby midge25 » Nov 18th, '04, 12:34

I like nothing better on christmas day, after getting rid of all the family to site down and flick through a book.

This Christmas I would quite like a magic book to read, but am a bit short on inspiration.

I own derren browns books, 13 steps, anneman, theatre of the mind, bobo coin magic, paramiracles and mind myth and magic.

As you can see my main interest is mentalism, but I am open to suggestions to read something interesting, not necessarily full of effects.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

I've just ordered Ian Rowland's Lecture notes, for my birthday! - (yep, buying my own present, because no-one else in my family knows how to shop online...) It's got good reviews on his site, and i'll put a review up when it comes... I also like the Luke Jermay books have you got those...
...and then there's always Banachek, if you like that sort of thing.

If Mentalism is your main thing then I would whole heartedly suggest that you check out the Basil Horwitz "The Mental Magic of..." books

There are 4 of them (soon to be 5 I believe)

You would like Ian Rowland's lecture notes. They are the best I have seen: clearly written, well illustrated, and beautifully produced.

I would highly recommend Dunninger's Complete Encyclopedia of Magic by Joseph Dunninger.
I have had this book for over ten years now and still find it an excellent read. Some of the described effects are a little dated now but the MO could be used with more modern day items.
Even if you never use an effect from this book then it is an eye opening insight into latter day magic and methods.

Failing this I would have to recommend any book by Jerry Sadowitz, Peter Duffie or Paul Gordon.

I have many books by all the above authors but I particularly like Sadowitz and Duffie's book - Inspirations. This has 56 tricks and routines with an excellent section on the double deal by Jerry and a section on Okito box magic by Peter. The book also includes Peter's Bedazzled routine which is his version of Elmsley's Dazzle. All in all a great book but definitely not for the inexperienced card handler.
