Larges coins

Postby Mancunian Lee » Jan 4th, '12, 12:04

What large coins would you recommend for coin magic? I'm wanting to learn Coin One, I know its ambitious for a first coin routine but that's just me :D

The problem ive always had with coin magic is if they don't use sterling its obvious some sort of gimmick is being used imo. I know this is clearly not the case, you need larger coins so you can see the effect properly and im a bit silly for thinking it.

Half dollars seem to the be coin of choice, anyone ever had their choice of coin questioned?

I use poker chips.

Though I would recommend using smaller coins for learning sleights to begin with as I've found it's easier to translate tricks up the size scale than down (eg, I cannot muscle pass a 10p coin as I learnt with a poker chip, whereas i've seen people who learnt with a 10p be able to easily do a poker chip)

Re Coin One, I use 1 dollar or half dollar coins. I found £2 coins to heavy and due to the nature of the trick I don't think it's feasible to do it with 50p coins.

For other tricks I agree with Lawrence, start small.

I love old pennies, I know that they're not exactly everyday objects but people are familiar enough with them and I think that there's a certain charm about them that modern coins don't have. They're also just about the perfect size and weight for me.

You beat me to it. I use old Pennies and think the are great size and weight. There is also something mystical about using them. When I practice I use old Pennies and as many different UK coins as possible. If I am suddenly ask to perform some magic I ask to borrow a coin and I am then prepared for any UK coins.

Pennies and half dollars = copper/silver and spellbound.
