Maybe, but after a "pen thru" I can imagine someone asking "how did you do that?" but after a coinbite they probably only wonder how you got them to believe the broken coin was theirs. I really don't think they'd stare at their coin for hours afterwards wondering how you removed the top and put it back on.

But anyway, I'm losing this argument (thousands of happy coin nibblers to one) so I give up!

We all have one thing in common and that's know how its done, but as I'm sure some will agree the expression after from the audience/spector is amazing, especially if they say why a 10p and then you say ok a 50p or 2p, however I feel this comes under street magic and is best showing to just one person, other wise it can cause to complete confusion.

Perhaps another point to consider in this debate: if tricks like bite out coin and cig through coin (not one that I've ever done) are performed as part of a routine containing a variety of say half a dozen tricks, if they are all performed well then the magic as a whole is usually strengthened in the eyes of the spectator.

This will usually take the heat away from parts of the routine and the performance will be judged as a whole, as will the magicians ability to entertain.

With all magic, it is a matter of how you make the spectator believe in what you are doing. If you just do the trick, and dont have convincing patter, then the effect can be either lost or look kinda shabby.

When i perform the biteout, i talk about how there is a big counterfeiting gang making coins and notes, and a great persent of the coins in circulation are fake. I then ask to borrow a 10p and say "do you know if this coin is fake?" then, i take a bite out of the coin and they are stunned, because the stary has added to the effect, if you were to say, i can take bites out of any coin, it wouldnt be as believable, but by saying that some are counterfeits, people can think, "well, if its fake, how do we know?"

In my opinion, all magic is created by the patter, the coin is merely a tool to help create an effect.
