I've Fallen Through The Rabbit Hole

Postby nosejam » Feb 20th, '12, 21:32

I'm relatively new to being this side of the mirror of the magic world, in September '11 I bought myself a couple of packs of cards, The Royal Road and Modern Coin Magic, and started my journey. I've not been able to commit as much time as I would like to this art, but I've been plugging away. I only really planned to learn a few little things to entertain myself and maybe learn how a few effects were created; I enjoy reading around magic theory and history as much as I enjoy doing it.

But having shown my little cousin a few of my tricks with cards she informed me I had to perform at her 7th birthday party in December, this really kicked me up about 3 gears having to really put some effort into it. While the routine (about 40 minutes) left a lot to be desired and some of the tricks not hitting for my first performance it was a resounding success, my cousin still comes up to me asking me to make her card appear in my shoe, a coin appear in an orange or bend another coin in her hand (Errr I've run out of magic today we'll have to try tomorrow).

My boss at work has offered me a regular paid gig, but I need a lot of polish and practice and tips before I'm ready for that, and this forum seems a friendly place to get advice.

I could go on but I've got a paddle move to perfect...

James

Sounds like you've made a great start to things, well done to you and good luck with where it takes you. There's nothing better for learning and finding out what really works than getting out there and performing for people.

Welcome to the forum, I'm quite new to magic myself.

The best advice I can give is to learn one thing at a time. Better to able able to do 3 illusions well than 50 badly. I can give the advice, I just can't take it :D

Looks like we're in the same boat, that's definitely something easier said than done

It's so easy to pop into your local magic shop, or your favourite online store, &
do a few hundred quid in, when all you wanted was a blue deck of cards, but sod it.

The bills can wait :D :D
