O.k. You have one effect to make an impression on someone (be it a fellow magician, stranger or woman/man of your dreams). Which effect is your reputation maker?

I was trying to think which one I would do, and I still can't narrow it down from a routine to one effect.

Mine would be a cut and restored rope routine (non gimmicked rope).

I've found that although my specs like cards, everyone does cards these days.

I use Joe Riding's Roped In routine (learnt from manuscript) with a pair of gimmicked cut / no cut scissors. I'll also occasionally add Richard Sander's Fibre Optics routine between the cut and restore parts of the routine.

Never fails as the rope is examinable before, afterwards and at various times during the routine.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

the rope gets my vote but also i have to mention the haunted key for its versitility in presentation, including the leadons for key bending tang removal etc.

i'll often start with the key tied to a rope and do the hindu thief routine were a thief cuts the rope then ties it back, mage cuts through the origional not to restore order.

basicly from a £20 outlay (including special key parts   ) plus some rope and you get a ten minuet routine ideal for street and table shows and a easy carry around demo trick setup.

Definitely my spoon bending routine.
It's a mixture of stuff I learnt from Banachek's dvd's, Osterland, Bavli and Kuffs. I've had a couple of magicians asking where I get the spoons that bend like that :D

(including special key parts Wink Wink )
my local key cuter suplied my with a bent key, a headless key and head for £5.

if you have the golden key variant then you already have an exchange for a finish but its not as good as the regular looking mortice version.

Judging from the feedback I've had, I would say that mine is Paul Harris's 'Galaxy'.

Mine is a version(s) of out of this world, leaving two definate piles of cards or photos, and no new lead cards half way through. I sometimes put in a 'mistake' which the spectator makes which is found to be predicted. The specs can never understand this one, as it seems that they had control over the deck at all times.

Borrowed ring on string routine with a kicker finish. Always impresses every time. Either that or colour changing knives with a kicker finish. I seem to do both of them more than most other routines. In fact a lot of the time, the knive routine is my opener and the ring routine is my closer

topping it off

I like to end with something light, so I usually finish things off with my take on Signore Colombini's Ringing Around Too, liberally sprinkled with one or two ideas from Steve Beam. Mr. Beam's rope concepts and routines are very clever indeed.

Considering myself being a beginner, I don't really know if I've had some sort of "reputation" yet (as I do magic mostly to my friends and family).

But to answer the question, my audiences have always loved Gambler vs. Magician (it is also my favorite) because it's the kind of trick where the audience will think "oh so that's what he's going to do" but the trick ends up differently.

The Koran deck (with Himber wallet).

It's the one effect I do that regularly gets the response "That's scary!"
