"Secrets of magic " show

Postby fletch » Jan 22nd, '05, 21:07

Slightly surprised that nobody has started a topic on this considering the potential controversy. I watched it with initial prejudice having been very irritated at the presenter revealing the workings of the TCM on Richard and Judy (I was home early OK  ).

However, despite the show supposedly being revealing, the explanations of the effects were largely overcomplicated to the point of being ridiculous. Most people know that what we're doing is not "magic" per se, and if our audience think we aregoing to these levels to fool them then we are not doing too badly.

Bottom line (IMHO) more questions asked than answered.

If you look at the post - something to look forward to under the events section then you'll find the discussion about this particular show.

And before you say - I agree that it's not an easy one to find and it appears to be a change of subject during a thread that started off discussing something else.

Anyway, there you have it. Enjoy.

"discussed" is strething things a bit. Mandrake said he didn't like the previous one, Nick said he actually quite liked the previous one, someone mebtioned the Richard and Judy thing, then Mark said he was disappointed at the magicain involved. No comments so far on the show itself.

Well let's make this the thread where the show gets discussed (and not the thread where the location of the thread of where the show gets discussed gets discussed)

For the record I thought the show was (in the words of Douglas Adams) fairly harmless. I really don't think any magician could be upset with it as what was given away seemed to be either bar tricks (I did like Etienne's flying spoon effect) or really elaboratey construceted for tv effects that just would never get performed in the real world (certainly not with the way they did them anyway!!!)

It was also nice seing mandrake's kettle make an appearance. (not sure why I refer to it as mandrake's - I think he must have started a thread about one somewhere).

It was also good not to have the b-list celebs guessing - on the whole I thought the fomat was ok, and watchable by magicians and non magicians alike.

In saying that though, I would still prefer to see the Paul Daniels Magic Show brought back...

Transferred from the other thread (!):

If we ignore the potty 'tube up your trouser leg etc' secrets, the proper tricks were quite good although I'd love to know what time of day they filmed in Asda. There are never, ever, never cashiers available like that! Good to see they did away with the panel of 'C' list celebs, hopefully for the third programme they'll do away with the daft tricks and secrets and show twice as much proper magic.

Notes: Nice to see you thought the celebs last time were 'B' compared to my score of 'A' and yes, you're right, I did mention the Kettle yonks ago but the version I have doesn't involve the catheter tubing!

I must admit i did worry when i saw the spoon fly out of the mug.
i thought that they were going to show the workings of 'jump' by John Kennedy (excuse me if this isnt his original idea).
but i must admit it did surprise me with the bulldog clip, never thought of that one before!

I must admit that the Tea spoon was my personal favourite for it's sheer simplicity. I wonder how many spoons will be flying around the office tomorrow at break time?

I really want to find out what the 3 card monte routine was that the guy performed on Richard and Judy was before he gave away the secrets to the version on the street. It looked pretty good. Does anyone know?

It was a load of rubbish wasnt it.
I know that this was better than the first attempt, but i sat there thinking
" I cant believe i am watching this !"
The only time i thought" how?", was when my local Asdas was shown to be empty!!!! I mean, Have you ever been to an asdas empty?
( the woman was an actress by the way)
Overall very silly, and slightly insulting.

the handling of the Kettle trick wasnt bad though. And, for those who are interested, the truck trick at the begining works much like something explained in Steinmyers hiding the elephant.

All I can say , is that it is a classic of magic.
However if I remember back , most times I have seen it performed some smart allec always asks for crème de menthe.
It’s a wonderful prop by the way. Very Expensive.

Have a look at http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic1431.p ... ght=kettle for the initial Review. Not sure about availability these days but the Mak one definitely works differently to the one shown on the TV on Saturday.
