Lennart Green's Top Shot.

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

It's a bit counter intuitive how the card starts to spin clockwise if you have the index finger in the way. As soon as the card hits the index finger it rotates around it and spins counter clockwise. So I'm confused all together. After weeks of trying it I still can't get good speed and spin on the card. They kind of turn over and flop and sometimes I can catch them.

Okay... would like to help you but it's kind of hard to do it in text. It is the pinky that does all the work. Pull the lower right corner with your pinky to the right very fast and sort of make it pivot around your first finger (index finger?). I'm holding the deck in my left hand with the thumb at the extreme upper left corner and the index finger at the upper right corner and the the first phalange of the pinky should be at the lower right corner. Then you pull to the right with the pinky and make the card pivot around the index finger and then by the power of your pinky the card realeases from underneath the index. Very very hard to explain in text and even more hard for me because I'm not english, but try to explain what goes wrong and maybe I can help you.

Lennart green top shoot "impossible"

Postby CrdShrk20 » Dec 17th, '08, 11:04

I dont think top shot is really that hard, one of the hardest move to really master is the pass i think, took me about 1 week to do 10 top shots in arow without missing any.

been doing it for about 6 month now and it feels like ive masterd it occasionaly i miss but i suspect that even lennart do that.

Suppose you gotta keep practising, i was practising this move for about 7 hours aday, for about 1 week untill i got the 10 in arow

or you could just use the slickflick, which allows you to also shoot a double off the top and catch it aligned........ sooo many possibilities.

I can do the topshot fine, but my problem is I can't ever catch the f***ers! That, to me is the hard part. If I just wanted a card to go zooming across the table then I'd be set.

Seriously try using my topshot from Urban, if you PM me i'll run you all through it (incase anyone thinks i am trying to sell a certain DVD)

Choice is yours, which one you use..you decide.

The issue I had with Lennart's top shot was working out where the card would go. The explanation on his DVD was quite brief for a move that requires such a large amount of practice to hit every time.

I found that if the deck is gripped as per Lennart's guidance the cards will pop off fine. If you hold the deck and imagine a line going diagonally from the top outer edge (where you themb would be) to the inner corner (where the pinky does its work) then the card will usually shoot in this direction. Then all you have to do is play with the angle of the deck by tilting your wrist. The more horizontal the deck is to the ground, the further the card will travel. This will help you guage where your catching hand should be.

Hope this a) helps and b) makes sense.

Top Shot isn't it see

Postby Tommy Magic » Jan 25th, '09, 23:56

This is one of my favourite moves. Brilliant as part of the ACR to add some sparkle, so my advice is keep practising! I found that flexing the pack down at the corners with first finger and thumb helps to make the card fly. Lennart's explanation is sound, it just takes time. Once I had the move down I would set myself targets (10 shots in a row before bed - and after the tequilla practise the top shot  ) If you are struggling to catch 'em then try following the card as it flies through the air. Sounds stupid, but moving your head to follow the path in an 'overly obvious' way seemed to help me master the catching bit! Alternatively don't even bother catching - a karate chop with the R hand down towards the top of the pack that magically causes the chosen card to fly out is a good way to perform the top shot without having to worry about catching it?

I've been practising this a little bit on a Bicycle Deck. At first the deck would just open like a book, then I got a card to flick up and do a spin - I'm now trying to generate more tension for it to fly across to my other hand.

Anyway, a tip which I've just had luck with... I have a plastic security card (exactly the same size as a credit card (even has rounded edges like a playing card) - I don't recommend you use your credit card unless you want to risk snapping it).

In the absence of cards, I was gripping it in my left hand in preparation for the top shot, and I did manage to make it flick across the table using the added tips from Andy Coates (thank you). I think because it's plastic and a bit thicker I could create a bit more tension. The direction needs working on, but I'll learn to walk before I run. For now I'm thrilled I got some speed, and some 'air'! Yes it was only one 'card', its smaller and made of plastic, but I'm hoping I can transfer the method of generating tension and the arching of the 'card' to real cards.

I'll experiment with using a full deck, or half a deck and see if any are easier.

Oh yeah - if you do want to try this with a plastic card and don't want to ruin your credit cards, try using any store cards you have (you're better off without them anyway!)
