Our 14 year old son is magic mad but running out of ideas at the moment, this event looks to be very expensive but would it be worth us going as it looks to be about £100 for the two of us which seems a lot to me as I havent a clue what goes on at them?

Check out the previous threads on conventions over the past few years for an indication of what usually happens. However, based on the last 10 years of attendance at Blackpool I can advise a very brief version. There are lectures and masterclasses all day long, often more than one at the same time so choices have to be made. The gala shows are usually well worth seeing as long as you're OK about a 14 year old staying up so late.

Some of the lectures will be of no interest but I usually find that even the most unappealing lecture contains a nugget or two of useful and usable stuff so I never pre-judge.

The Dealer Halls(s) are a minefield of temptations just waiting to separate you from your cash but there are usually many bargains to be had - just be prudent in your expenditure, don't buy on impulse, and check all the Dealers out before getting your wallet out.

Blackpool isn't cheap by any means but there are many opportunities gathered together in one place which you can't get anywhere else.

Latest news on the line up is that Ali Cooke will top the bill on the Saturday.

My son and I have been the last 2 years. Adam is 12 (will turn 13 on the Sunday) and there's plenty to interest him there. And I'm happy to let him stay up late - even to the lectures that are on after the gala shows on the Friday and Saturday!

We really enjoyed the magic speed dating last year - 10 minutes with each of about 10 magicians taking questions and doing a mini Masterclass.

Those who are new to Blackpool should be aware that it can be a dangerous place, I was there for a brief visit last April and down on the beach a policeman was watching a bloke and his wife having a violent argument. He did nothing to intervene even when the bloke picked up a piece of wood and started hitting the woman, she grabbed the wood off him and starting hitting him just as violently, then they both attacked the policeman with the piece of wood.

Then the crocodile turned up and ran off with the sausages…..
