Help on presentation?

Postby CallumK » Mar 8th, '13, 15:14

I was just wondering how do you guys go about presenting tricks. Because, even if i do amazing effects, it all comes down to the presentation. I was wondering if you guys can help give me a few tips with this. I've been planning to buy Strong Magic by darwin and also Al Schneider's magic books because i heard good things about them in terms of connecting with the spectators, making the moment memorable, etc. Im not particularly amazing at being a magi, and im fairly new to performing with spectators. (spent over a year infront of a mirror :p) Any replies and pointers would be very much appreciated :)

I've heard that Strong Magic is an excellent book for this sort of thing - I intend to get myself a copy in the near future. I think one key tip to help make effects truly magical is that when you perform them you yourself need to believe that they are genuine miracles. If you present them like puzzles or curiosities then the spectators will react appropriately and not be particularly amazed. But if you can make yourself believe that you are demonstrating real magic then it will be so much more powerful for those watching. If you come across as being amazed at the things that you are accomplishing then the spectators are more likely to be amazed as well.

Think about what you like to see magicians do.
Look at stand up comedians and actors, see what they do.
Also show your enjoyment of your magic and the belief in the magic that is happening.

Join your local Toastmasters Club. They are experts in presentation. They will teach you everything you need to know.

You won't get it from magic books.

when it comes to presentation its going to be entirely personal, depending on my mood and who im in front of changes the way i present a trick, sometimes i find less is more and sometimes i find making a big show of things works better, its going to depend on how you feel, if you arent into making things a big show then that will communicate across to the audience and the presentation will be lacking conviction, so basically what im saying is, find something you believe in performance wise and go with that, i personally find that less of a presentation works best for myself, where as a friend of mine performing the same trick has to make a bigger show of it because of his personality. i know this probably hasnt helped at all but i guess what im saying is, be yourself or something you believe in and that will help convey what you want across to the audience much easier.
