Looks pretty good. Not sure about the monocephalic Zaphod, but Martin Freeman looks to be an excellent choice of an Arthur.

Hmm, as someone who used to be able to quote the first three pages verbatim I'm a wee bit skeptical about 'Hollywooding' such a beloved book. If I didn't know that DNA had a major part in getting the film made I would probably be spouting off some indignant rant about defiling National Treasures.

As it is I'll probably go wishing for Sin City but expecting The Day of the Jackal...(the new, c*** (not the best) version, natch).

Take care, Ian

The first 3 pages verbatim.... impressive......

Seriously though, there is little for fans to worry about. If it's rubbish then we can forget it, and if it's good then we'll be shouting from the rooftops. Don't see the point in being grumpy about it, it'll work or it won't.

If we took the view that Ian's suggesting we would have no reworkings of any theatre.

But things were different in my day.......

Well personally I don't think it is as quite straight forward as that. There probably is only going to be one film made of this classic so if they balls it up there is going to be little hope for another better version. Just think how excited we all were when we heard the film was going to be made. Expectations are very high, as they were with Lord of the Rings. Imagine how disappointing it would have been if LOTR was anything but the epic it was...

I think the main thing to hope is that they keep as much as the original radio script as possible bacause as Ian has already pointed out - so many people do know masses of it word for word. It's a little like Monty Python in that respect.

It's a big shame that Douglas Adams isn't still about to keep control on things. Actually it's a big shame that Douglas Adams isn't about period.

On the flip side though, so far there has been the Radio Show (the best adaptation IMHO), the book, the TV show (good grief) and I even saw it performed as a play.

Now - the TV show I think we can all agree was pretty blake7esque (or Naff for those that don't know what Blake-7 was), but having said that the words were so good that it was still eminently watchable by most HHGTTG fans. It's the words that are magic. That's why the radio show and book were so good as we could create our own mental imagery.

Personally, I think the film will be great whatever it's like - as long as the words are still there.

I didn't suggest the complete abandonment of reworkings, I'm just a little bit jaded when Hollywood ignores the plethora of original scripts to remake films, and in the process completely *rse it up.

Examples include; Day of the Jackal, Les Visiteurs, Nikita (which was not actually that bad, as I saw the remake before the original), Barb Wire (seriously, whoever decided to remake Casablanca should be shot) and so on.

It's a fact of life that the first generation Hikers are now grumpy old men with computers. Expect e-grumps.

Take care, Ian

Fair points from both of you. My point really is that we should give it a chance rather than dismiss it out of hand on the basis of other remakes which have been stuffed up. If you go into things with the view the'yr bound to be cr@p then there's little hope of enjoying them.

We can but hope, and there's little on the trailer that worries me. I think it will be superb.

(And for the record I'm also one of the 1st generation, have a computer and am at certain times less than cheerful).

Er, that would be on B@stard Hard Moves made Easy - it's a bit of a thread jack, but click on the link in my .sig

And now back to the e-grumps; did anyone else see the Masters of Krikit towards the end of the trailer? Or am I imagining it?

Take care, Ian

This worries me. It seems space and time type films are hard to get right. I am not lookig forward to the new Dr Who either.

They are making a Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy? Cool. I hate being in a third world country. We are always so behind with things. I will probably watchit when you all have forgotten that it was made.

a hitchhiker movie came out in 1981 staring sigmund jones and david dixon. It was very very bad, with cheesy 80s effects. The voice for Marvin in that movie seems the same as the voice of marvin in this new movie.

I started reading this book over again about a month ago. Three days ago a friend gave me the '81 video to watch, which I did yesterday. Today I see this thread and the trailer. Could this be pervasive in my life? Maybe I'm from another planet and just don't know it yet. I never could get the hang of Thursday.
