Fooling Myself?

Postby blamejoe » Feb 28th, '05, 13:24

Ok, so here's where I am at. I'm planning to get into close up magic with ordinary items (non-gimmicked or preset) I know some card tricks, a rubber band trick or two, 2 coin sleights, etc. I plan to learn a lot more, but as I'm learning new tricks, everything seems to need some "secret item". TTs, special decks, you know. I just learned astral projection and the pen is mightier, by jay sankey, and these too, reinforce the idea that I need special props to expand my skills.

Am I fooling myself into thinking I perform good "impromptu" shows for one or 2 people, simply using things I can borrow without props? I've been looking into a T**it, but I'm not sure I even want to get that involved in props. The only future I can see in it is to use 99% card tricks, but I'd rather not rely solely on one prop.

Is anyone able to give me hope?

Actually - there's a ton of stuff you can do with ordinary objects - string, rope, coins, elastic bands, spoons, forks, cigarettes, pencils and notepads, pens, ordinary cards etc. etc.
Any book on sleight of hand will give you a wealth of stuff you can do impromptu.
The classics - Modern Coin magic, Royal road to card magic etc. have tons of impromptu effects.
Also - there's loads of stuff to do with rubber bands - check out Pinnacle and Elastrix, Crazy man's handcuffs etc.
