Dead of night

Postby AndyRegs » Mar 9th, '05, 15:32

I have recently purchased Andy Nyman's dvd 'Get Nyman'. An excellent dvd that i would highly recommend. I was blown away with the effect 'dead of night', but don't know where to get the 'things' that it requires. Has anyone already done this, and if so can you pm me with the details of where to get hold of the specific things. Cheers

I would recommend you contact Clive Leewarden at Cards4Magic (www.cards4magic.co.uk).

It MAY just be that he'll be able to help ;)

Question

Postby kardtrik » Mar 10th, '05, 00:17

Being over here across the pond, I often find myself not recognising names of magicians that the rest of you throw around.

That said, could you describe this guy,a nd what he does, and what attracted you to him in general.

This forum could be a great outlet for me to discover new magic that hasn't been discovered here in the states, and that works both ways, fellas--if you want to know anything about an american magician, I'll do my best to fill you in.

Thanks,.

Andy 'the Diamond' Nyman is primarily a mentalist. He does what some would describe as 'mental magic', because he uses a few props, but he's extremely entertaining.

His primary interest is acting and he's appeared in a few films.

He's friends with Derren Brown and co-directed his first live show and also advises on Derren's TV series. It's possible he's involved with Mr Brown's new live tour in a similar capacity.

As to 'Dead of Night', I would suggest waiting until Alakazam release it as a stand-alone item. I've got Andy's notes where he goes into more detail about the effect and it really will take you ages. I'm rather surprised that 'Dead of Night' isn't out yet, as the DVD's was released ages ago. Maybe there have been some technical problems.

You could always give Alakazam a call.

Not to mention he is also a fantastic actor too and has been the consultant for all of Derren's programmes.

Mentalism

Postby kardtrik » Mar 23rd, '05, 08:39

Mentalism is for suckers!

Just kidding. I have seen some great mentalists. Not sure about the guys on your hemisphere, but Larry Becker is the best I've seen here.'

Thanks for the info, but I'm most definately not a mentalism kinda guy.

For every good mentalist I've seen, I've seen ten horrible ones. If you are going to do this type of magic, please make it entertaining. That's all I ask.

I've said it in other posts, and I'll say it again. Magic is an art form, and we need to come together as artists and convey that to the genreal population. Whatever you specialize in, please be good at it. Let's start a revolution here where we, as magicians, are not viewed as something that would be neat for little Johnnie's 8th birthday party.

Let's bring back the days when magic was viewed in grand theatres, and looked upon with reverence as a true art form. It is, after all.

So, mentalism or not, whatever you do, please do it well. For all of our sakes.

B!

What you have just described to some degree is how people like Andy Nyman and his good friend derren brown (who in my opinion is taking magic, mentalism, ??????? to the next level. If you haven't seen him perform, then do!) feel about magic. Try reading derren browns books 'absolute magic' or 'pure effect', and you will see what I mean. I could go on forever quoting parts of the book to show you what I mean, but there is so much good stuff in them, that i would be breaching copyright laws!

I placed an order with Alakazam last week and Peter Nardi said that it should be out in about six weeks (ie now five weeks).

They are accepting pre-orders.

Kardtrik, I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of Larry Becker's material (it's too gimmicky for my tastes), but he does have a great presentational style.

Andy Nyman is a trained actor, so he knows what he's doing with a show. I think you'd like him.
