Ultimate Ace Assembly

Postby katrielalex » Mar 14th, '05, 11:03

Sorry about posting so many reviews request...

The demo vid on Penguin for Oz's Ultimate Ace Assembly looks impressive; however, I noticed that it requires a gimmick. Can anyone give me some clues to the nature of this gimmick, without giving too much away? e.g. can it be made from normal household items; does it require the special assortment deck...

Thanks a lot!

Kati

The gimmick uses the 'sticky card' principle (hope I can say this) and the video explains all, incouding how to assemble.

I bought and didn't like - too much setting up in advance. Looks good but unless you get it perfect, you'll be caught out.

I once emailed Penguin about the set-ups or impromptu-ness of the instant downloads, and theire reply was;

NONE of our Instant Downloads require special preparation.

Hmmmm........

Yeah right...I happen to know that several of them do.

Take Red Hot Mamacita, take this one, there's tons...

maybe a trip down to office world for all of the bits and pieces isn't much prep for some, particularly if you work there or live across the road

If that's what Penguin say then they are trying to pull a fast one!

I watched over the Aces video again, and the handling suddenly clicked...

I got how he does Mamacita, but I think that the way he does it is really slick...

There's no doubt that Oz's handling is extremely slick and this perhaps gives the impression that the Ultimate Ace Assembly is easier than it actually is.

The principle is actually quite simple but as I said before, it's the way that it's all put together that makes it potentially risky in my opinion, and it's not an impromptu effect.

Looks nice on the video though!

The video is nice, but in the real world the gimmick is not very pratical.
Some others versions are better.

Yes...I have not ordered this. I see now how it works, and I agree that it would really not work in 'normal' situations...

Well gee... I was considering to purchase this trick but after your "sticky" solution I figured it out simply by watching the demo. You saved me five bucks there. And you saved me another 10 on Red Hot Mamacita. Great clues.

Katrie,

I can't really recommend either Ultimate Ace Assembly or Red Hot Mamacita -

Yes, Oz does make it look "slick" but with a little work, ANY ace assembly routine (most of which require less prep work) hits just as hard as his version.

As for Mamacita, his method, in my opinion waters-down the effect. If you want effects like this - look into Chicago Opener and Red Hot Mamma - the original handlings of Oz's variation. Both are stronger finishes, and you're left clean. Before anyone says anything - yes all variations end with a "surprise change" but with the originals the ENTIRE deck can be examined without having to do anything fancy.

However, if you're like me - the entire concept behind the various effects never really worked for me. The whole "blushing" card is alright - but it always felt strange going through the patter. I tried a variation going with a "cold" theme (pm me if you want more info on it), but even that left the same hole the original left.

If you're interested - check out Jay Sankey's Front Row Sankey. The dvd is filled with great effects. One trick - NOT THIS CARD - is an excellent variation on the theme, and one I find is easier to work with an into a card routine, since the "special" card is introduced to the spectator right at the beginning. It's definitely worth a look.

I would say the only benefit to the Oz's Ace Assembly is the final colour change. It looks really convinicing. Also the spectator's hand is on the pile of cards in the end which improves the effect greatly because the spectator thinks the magic happened in his hands!

Even though I haven't really practiced this effect, it looks good. The click could probably hidden with patter. I don't do this trick because it requires using gimmicked cards and I don't like using gimmicks or ruining my cards.

I agree with the final color change -

But with a typical McDonald's Aces routine - you can have the spectator put their hand on the pile during the entire effect, and you get the same strong reactions.

Don't get me wrong, I like most of the work Oz does - but in this case, the effect loses some luster.
