Wax on, Wax off (Card on Ceiling)

Postby fatman » Jun 9th, '05, 13:35

Can anyone recommend a good wax (or substitute) for the card on the ceiling effect. I want to start doing it after seeing it in the Michael Ammar lecture from the Magic Castle. He says that standard magicican's wax is to hard and I am certainly finding that with the wax I have (which I use to anchor my ITR).

I have the handling and everything is going fine (in practice) but I can't get the card to stick!

(posted on Michael Ammars card on ceiling thread also)

if its too hard, can you not 'dilite' it with a bit of water, not much as that will ruin it, but just a drop. There was a site selling really good wax, apparently, ill edit if i remember where

If you look around at some online magic shops, or any real magic shops, you should be able to find Michael Ammar's "Card on Ceiling Wax".

It's marketed as what it is. It should be easy enough to find. Sometimes you just have to know what to look for.

Michael Ammar Magic Wax for Card on Ceiling - Warning

Postby Sharon » Nov 4th, '05, 10:34

This is a really big issue with WAX and sticking any item to ceilings etc.

If there is paint on ths surface it will be stripped off when you remove the item with the wax.

This is a complete disaster if you do House shows as I do..... most houses have paint on the ceilings and walls.....

Be warned! My ceiling has to be touched up with paint and it would be a disaster if every place I did this trick had to be painted afterwards.

Good concept but not practical on ceilings!

This is the best stuff for the job.

Sharon, I disaggree with the idea that Card on Ceiling is an impractical effect. The only reason I started doing the Card on Ceiling is that it leaves a very definate reminder of the magic that took place there. Therefore, I always make a big deal of the effect, in the hope that people won't want to take the card down once I leave.

So far, the times that I've gone back to the same place twice, my card is still there.

All the best,

Will Wood

I use sticky tape folded over so it makes home made double-sided sticky tape.

Its pretty good, and you probably won't need to go out and by it just for this effect.

I mostly do 'Card on Wall', because its hard to get it off the ceiling :D

By the way, I have had several problems in my room where paint came off due to my scotch-taping something to the wall. It wasn't wax, but it was a problem so I would recommend that you find some way of avoiding this before you go to somebody's house and strip off the wall paint...

:P

so i finally found a use for my pot of MW...but the pot now seems to have been lost to the depths of my 'magic props' box.

Damnation!

I seem to have the technique down...just got to try it for real now. I'm going to grab some of this;

...but it does look a little tough. Anyone regularly do this trick that can recommend a UK supplier for not-so-tough yet kinda sticky MW?

thanks,
Alex

Dental wax that is used on braces makes for a good substitue for both CoC and blue glue. Ideally you want to find the unflavored version- the mint flavoring that is added comes with a minty smell as well.

Interesting substitute, although this may be a little tricky to source in the uk - there seems to be only 1 high street retailer who stocks this (but its mint!)

The chap in International Magic once refused to sell me Ammar's wax as he didn't think I'd paid anyone to learn the secret ....

you could always just blue-tac a dupe on the ceiling in advance. no one ever looks at the ceiling.
