Freedom Writer

Postby Johnny Wizz » May 21st, '15, 23:01

Anyone tried it?

The video is obviously so full of holes that it doesn't give any idea about how the effect is actually performed.

So I am assuming that the old axiom " if it looks too good to be true it probably is too good to be true" applies here?

The write up and hype is so intense I'm equally dubious!

I am just giving this a poke because I am surprised that nobody knows anything about this product.

Methinks this is a good case for supporting bricks and mortar shops where you can visit, see the effect in the flesh and possibly get an honest assessment from the shop owner/performer? OK, not everyone can get to a shop easily but if you can then it must be an easier way to make a wise buying decision?

From the murmerings that I've heard, I'm not convinced that this gives you anything that a good old fashoned swami doesn't. I've been using Bob Cassidy's banjo pick swami for years, they're easy to put on, easy to ditch and I've never been caught out with one. Plus at that price, the Freedom Writer isn't particularly exciting me beyond a vague curiosity.

In response to what Mandrake said I couldn't agree more. When I lived in Oxford we would quite often have a day on the south coast and I would always take the opportunity to visit the Aladins cave which is Mike Danatas shop in Boscombe. Sadly, now I am living in Cornwall I have been unable to find any shops at all. To Lady of Mystery, I have never been able to use a nail writer and I have resorted to a TT writer. I have however found that this is liable to let me down if I press to hard as the lead slips back inside. I have tried looking up the Bob Cassidy writer you mention but can't find any reference to it being sold anywhere.

Bobs writer is in one of his books but I can't remember which one, I'll have a hunt over the weekend and see if I can find it.

Interestingly Vanishing Magic have sent out an email:

Vanishing Magic wrote:The REAL Story on Freedom Writer
An honest look at Freedom Writer by the Vanishing Inc. team

One of our principles at Vanishing Inc. is to carry ONLY the products we love, and to tell you about them, warts and all, in the most honest way possible. Remember—if it's not good, we won't bother carrying it, so we're excited about the things we share. But in the case of Freedom Writer, we believe this is something extraordinary.

We are close-up magicians who have a deep interest and respect for mentalism. But because we are not mentalists first, we share the fear many magicians have of boon writers, nail writers, and the like. The fear comes from a place of practicality: where do you store it between uses? Will it break in your pocket? How long before the sticky substance becomes unsticky? What is the reset time like? What misdirection do you use to put it on?

All these problems have been solved in a way so perfect that we believe this will become the gold standard in the industry. Without revealing too much, here is what you receive in this extremely impressive package:

A custom designed writer that is magnetic, so that you can display an envelope, post-it pad, etc., with hands totally free, and then simply by sliding your thumb into place and pushing, you have access to the pencil writer.

You can use this in the fabulous window-cut envelopes they provide, on your business card, or practically anywhere. Really generous refills of card stock, envelope, shim, and lead are provided, and if even you use this regularly, we can't imagine you would have to replenish at all.

You even get a double-sided box so that you can have a business card and envelope examined, and then switch in the set with the Freedom Writer attached.

We read the massive Magic Cafe thread on this prop and it was quite polarizing. For the most part, the negative reviews misinterpreted this as a shortcut for learning how to use nail-writer. There is never a shortcut to good magic, and we believe that the promise of this prop is that it's the BEST nail-writer invented, not an easy shortcut. With that in mind, we're very confident you'll be pleased.

Paul Harris's releases are always high quality, but speaking honestly, they tend to fit neatly in one of two categories. They are either great "toys" for amateurs, with a focus on making magic as easy as possible, or they are truly inspirational tricks or improvements for the working professional. Happily, this is an example of the latter, and we're completely impressed with the ingenuity of this gimmick, the applications they have devised, and the kit you receive. This won't only be the best boon you've ever purchased, but it will actually allow you to do things no other boon will.

Personally I think I'll be giving the Freedom Writer a miss, from the people I've been talking to it sounds like it's not really all that it's made out to be. It'd be great to hear anyone elses opinions on it but £44 for a swami just seems way over the top to me, I think I'll be sticking with my £1 homemade writers that work perfectly well.

My home made writer is very cheap, I use the metal thingy which holds the wick in a tealight with a bit of pencil lead and a blob of whichever glue Mrs.M.has in her card making stash! :D
